layin on the smackdown
Question: For all you you members out there that shoot a muzzle loader with a bullet drop compensation reticle scope, here is my question...What power do you have it set on when sighting in you muzzle loader? I know that there will be a major difference in where your projectile hits when you zoom in and out, and i have heard some people say to set your scope at 3X, while i have also heard others say to set it at 10X...any and all input is greatly appreciated. Or simply, how do you guys sight in your BDC scopes? thanks Dan
dbHunterNY
I've just sighted in a new one. Mine's a Nikon Omega, but they all really function the same as far as I know. Your primary crosshair in the middle of the scope picture is said to be your 100 yard crosshair. When adjusting your power its point of impact will remain the same. Therefore, to get to tightest groups and precisely sight in your rifle you should put it on the highest power. Sight in your scope dead on at 100 yards with this crosshair. Now move your target out to as far as you think you're comfortable shooting in an increment that the muzzleloader scope BDC has a dot, crosshair, or circle for. This is going to be 250, 225, or 200 yards if you've got an actual muzzleloader scope. Mark a point of aim toward the top of your target. Shoot to get a good group, while aiming with your 100 yard crosshair at this top bullseye. The target should be a few feet tall to catch to bullets point of impact lower on the target. Adjust your power such that your closest crosshair to your low hitting group is dead centered on it, while your 100 yard crosshair is dead centered on your top bullseye you were aiming at. Then shoot using each crosshair, dot, or circle at varying distances that make sense to figure out what your point of impact is for each one. Although not exact, reading the manual that comes with the scope makes knowing what yardage these crosshairs should be set at much easier. - Dan Edited September 30, 2009 by dbHunterNY
layin on the smackdown
OK, that seems to make sense. Crank her up to full power, dial her in at 100 (the scope is set for 100, 150, 200, & 250). Then bump the target back to 250, aim high with the 100 yrd crosshair, and adjust the power to match the lowest crosshairs with where the impact point of the bullet is. I will give it a whirl... Thanks for the info Dan... -dan
