The Drought is OVER!!!!!!

The last buck I shot with my bow was in 1999.........Last night 9-30-09 I ended the drought and tagged another.......

Here is the story......

Missouri season opens Sept 15. The first part of September I found a 10 point buck and a smaller 8 point using a hay field. One problem is they where 2 miles from our family farm. Since I knew the land owners I asked permission to hunt this small area. As luck would have they gave me permission. I watched the 10 pointer on several nights entering the hay field. I videoed him one night to confirm he was worthy of an arrow given the chance. The week prior to the MO opener I watched him 4 nights come out of the same corner about the same time every night. The day before the opener same thing....My hopes where sky high on the opening week for me to tag this buck. LOL

After the first week of season reality had hit. I hunted the area every night and NEVER saw the buck. The wind was perfect every night I just for whatever reason never saw him. After the first week I had figured he had ended his summer pattern and was gone:(, so my hope was to cash in during the rut. The second week of season I never hunted this farm...about every night the wind was wrong so I stayed out.

Last night my buddy and I went back to this farm but to a different part of the farm. We took climbers and the plan was to film a kill and possible learn something more about the area. However, reality told me if we were going to get a kill it would probably be of him shooting a doe.

On our way in we spooked 3 does, we walked entire to much of the draw and made to much noise.....So we both had the feeling there was NO WAY we were going to have much luck tonight.....

A little after 6 everything changed!!! Off to our right we catch movement.....a nice big doe coming right to us. My buddy gets set; I get the camera going.....20 yards mmeeaaa THAWCK. My buddy smokes the doe. However he felt he didn't put the best of shots on her. So we are talking about the situation then I elect to re-watch the video. As I am re-watching the video I hear this odd noise behind me. This noise is a grunt/girdling/maybe growl noise. I really can't say that I have ever heard a whitetail make this noise before. So as I turn around to check out what in the world was behind me.....At a mere 12 yards is a buck. I take a quick glance to see it's him...the big 10 pointer...I grabbed my bow off my ez hanger, locked my release on and came to full draw. However my shot was limited the buck was quartering to me and I had a very small window to shoot through...As I am holding and looking I see if I don't shoot him at this window my next is going to be a long ways away if he continues in his current direction....As luck would have it he took one step to his right to open up a perfect broadside shot. All I had to do was hold a tad high to clear one limb. I settled the pin and squeezed the trigger................Big Buck DOWN!!!

At that point my buddy and I came unglued.... Looking back now I wish I would have turned the camera on and attempted to video the shot or at least our reactions. But when I turned around to check out that weird noise and all I saw was a big body and horns that close I had one thing on my mind.....SHOOT HIM!!!

Well as it turned out my buddies doe was down my buck was down and we had a LONG night ahead of us. Lucky for us my dad and one of his buddies showed up just in time to help drag. :D

This is going to be my best buck to date with a bow....and only my second with archery tackle. I pass a ton of bucks every year on my farm in hopes they grow bigger and that a bigger buck comes by. So for me to finally put my tag on a decent buck while using archery tackle and sharing the evening with my friends and family made for an amazing night!

Well here he is......

Thanks everyone!

I am excited to get him back from the taxidermist, or at least the horns. Wednesday night it was 60 degrees so in a rush to get everything taken care of (meat and cape) I never really got a chance to attempt to score the horns. I have a pretty good idea but others that have seen the video of him and pictures think I am off. So time will tell.

Regardless I am happy and excite with the buck. However I am not sure what I am going to do the rest of the fall.....I guess shoot alot of does and video :D:D:D

Thanks again everyone!!
