Ohio doe down!

Well, last night, Chris allowed me to invite myself over to some hunting property he has access to last night. We looked at the ariel map, there were a number of spots to pick from. We formed a game plan and off we went. Funny side note, at this point we always give a hand shake or fist bump for good luck. I reached for the hand shake, while he went for the fist bump. I went to the fist bump at the same time he switched to the hand shake. So I did what anyone of you would do, I grabbed him and gave him a big bear hug! :D :D

He hunted on the south side of the farm while I hunted the north. This was a farm I had never stepped foot on, so I went in solely on Chris’ word and the ariel map stuck in my head. He mentioned what he thought would be a good place to go, so I headed that direction. The corn bordering the woods was torn up from all of the deer damage. I found a trail into the woods, walked for what seemed like a mile in a half circle before I found a tree worthy of climbing. I’m sure that woods look 100% different in the fall/winter without the foliage, but right now in early October, it is a jungle. The tree I found allowed me to see two trails, one upwind and one downwind. I could only climb up about 10-12 feet, because of the canopy cover.

Anyway, long story short, I had two deer come in from behind me, both on the trail downwind of my location. The smaller one ran through my small shooting lane pretty quickly, I figured she winded something she didn’t like. I looked for the bigger doe, she was only 10-20 seconds behind, walking the trail. I stopped her at 15 yards broadside and my Hoyt Alphamax drove the Montec tipped Maxima through both lungs. She made it about 40 yards and fell over dead. I’m glad I was hunting with Chris, due to the terrain, that drag alone would have been a killer. She weighed in at 105 lbs dressed at the butcher shop. On Oct 10, we’ll have some summer sausage and some hot pepper sausage to snack on…..

No pics, as I forgot my camera and it was really late by the time we got her out of there. I made it to the processors by 9:30pm and was home around 10:15pm.

Yeah! Congrats again Tom. Awesome hunt. Had a lot of fun.

We were literally 5 yards from doubling up last night. I saw at least 6 different deer, but 8 total. ( I think the original 3 backed out and came around the corner, not really sure). The first ones I saw were 2 buttons and momma. The buttons passed behind me, downwind and momma followed. Fawns being fawns, they kept walking, but momma knew better, I think she winded me. When I turned to see where she was, she had me pinned. I tried to hide behind the tree, but the gig was up and she boogied at some point. I never did hear her walk away.

Anyway, while I was trying to call them back, Tom called with his news. I really thought we were going to double.

Yep, our relationship is on a whole new level.:D Funny what new deer land will do to a man.

I tried to tell Tom the creek bottom was the way to go, I'm glad he listened to my advice by going down there.

Did you say field edge or creek bottom? I thought for sure I heard you recommend the field edge.....

Glad I could find that tree for you though, you're going to arrow a Booner out of there this year, I can feel it. You're welcome.

LMAO.....Love the fist bump/handshake story.:D

Congrats on the doe, Tom.

Did Chris charge anything for his guide services???(other than the "never let you forget it" standard fee?):D:D

I swear to God I'm going to start taping our conversations. The "where to hunt" story is almost as good as the handshake/fist bump/hug story. :D

What direction did you say the deer would be coming from? Yeah, right.... Thanks for the access, I'll figure the rest out for us both on my own I guess..... :D

Uh huh.

Better question: do you have a deer at the processor right now?

Right.

I can't help that the deer got bamboozled in the corn and can't read a compass.

Corn fields can be confusing.

Congrats Tommy. Don't hesitate to share some of them sticks with your hunting brothers.
