Thanks for the response yall its a huge tradition here in Southern Va I love bow hunting and muzzleloading but I enjoy my share of dog hunting with shotgun!!!If youve never tried it dont knock it.There are rarely accidents because clubs talk about safety so much and its great for kids because its a lot of action in one day!!!Lots of fellowship at the clubhouses all year round.Great people and great times!!!

I'll agree with you, it is a lot of fun for anyone who's never done it. Nothing like the adrenalin when the dogs are burnin one up about to break into a clearcut. But, I havent been on a dog hunt in years. I prefer to still hunt, and don't like to be messed up, even though I am every year by the next camp over that makes no attempt to catch their dogs when they cross the highway. They'll get on our property and run wild for days with nobody even hunting anymore. I guess long story short, I'm glad their rights are protected, but also glad that dog season is limited to only certain parts of the reg deer season. These days I get my dog fun chasing bunnies with beagles in Feb. That's a real blast too.

funny that you ask this question...

THis month North American Whitetail has an article on this very topic... Here are the state they say still allow. Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, North and South Carolina and Virginia.

confederate-flag.jpg Only in the south.People around here have never heard of deer hunting with dogs. The people who already have there deer are the"dogs" on the deer drive. That is what hunting with dogs up north means.

Can't do it in IL, but you can use a dog to track a deer as long as your dog is leashed. I think the maximum leash length is 20ft, might be wrong, but i think that is the deal...As for hunting deer with dogs, anyone out there want to shine a light on this for me? I cant get the concept through my thick skull...do you use the dogs to drive, almost like a pheasant hunt, or do you just drop the dogs off and go sit at the other end of the field? I can't see it being easy, deer really put it into high gear when being chased, which doesn't make for an easy shot....if thats how its done. What types of dogs do people use?

I've only been on one dog hunt, and it was a long time ago. The way we done it the dogs were let out into a thicket to jump the deer out. The hunters posted up around the outside with there backs facing the thicket ready to shoot. You don't usually get many easy shots, so buckshot is usually the ammo of choice. Most shots are close range, and the deer usually drop right in their tracks. If its done safely it can be a lot of fun. I haven't participated in a dog hunt since I was about 9, but a lot of people still do it in the lower parts of SC. I just hate it when people don't catch their dogs when its over because they can ruin a perfectly good hunt in a heartbeat.

Cant in New York but I used to live in Florida where it was legal.

I hunted Richloam WMA and even though I did not own dogs I was friends with people who did run them there.

I knew where they were releasing them and where to position myself on the likely escape routes for certain areas.

One of which was right on a property line where they did not want their dogs to go. If I shot a deer off their dogs I gave them half(which was a common practice) and if their dogs where headed into property they did'nt want them to go or they were running a doe I would catch the dogs for them. It was a good relationship and yes it is a rush to have the dogs headed your way and know well ahead of time that a deer was in front of them.

You can here but only on certain dates. This year the dates are 11/21 through 12/1 and 12/24 through 1/20 in the zone I hunt in.

To each his own but I don't care for it at all though. I won't knock it though but I'll just say my negative attitude toward hunting with dogs comes from bad experiences.
