A Fairfield ILL man Aron J Long 20 was shot in the back by his hunting Buddy year old David Buchanan of Fairfield. Thursday at 7)M a half hour after dark.

Aaron was killed instantly, and let out a scream when he was hit in the back by hunting arrow.

The boys were to meet, and Aaron came down from his deer stand and was sitting on a small ridge when the 16 year old saw a object on the ground and shot, thinking it to be a wild turkey. Aaron was facing away and didn't see or hear David approach.

Bowhunting tragedy took place in Johnson ville Ill at Sam Dale Lake State Park ILL Wayne Co Ill.

this sends chills up yoru spine doesn't it?

Prayers for the two families.

The 16 year old failed to ID ID his target and now he has to live with this the rest of his life. I wonder if he took the National Bowhunter Education Program( NBEP) course?

No charges are being filed.

Prayers please

Sadly

No charges? How in the heck can you mistake a person for a turkey, let alone in bow range?

It's a truly sad thing and a truly stupid thing. The kid who shot his buddy is an idiot. I wonder how some of these people that pull stunts like this even wipe their own butts. What goes through a persons mind when they pull a stunt like this? How do you "not" know what your shooting at?

At 16 in Illinois he would have had to have taken a State Hunter Education Safety Course to get his hunting license. I just took it with my 12 year old and it was nearly 12 hours of classroom. Sad story indeed.

Here is an article on the situation from local news!

Fairfield Man Dies in Hunting Accident

1254546653_sm.jpg

WAYNE COUNTY- Illinois State Police are investigating the death of a Fairfield man killed in a hunting

accident Thursday night. It was around 6:45 on Thursday evening when 20 yr. Old Aaron Long and his 16 yr. Old friend were hunting turkeys here down this path at Sam Dale Lake in rural Wayne County, but just minutes later, the 16 year old friend made a fatal mistake.

Wayne County Sheriff Jim Hinkle says, "He believed he was shooting at a turkey, and after shooting he quickly realized that he had shot his friend." Hinkle says the 20 year old didn't live long after the shot.

The arrow pierced Long in the left side of his back near his heart. Shortly after the accident his friend found a group of hunters and they called 9-1-1.

The sheriff says because it was an accident- It's unlikely the young man will be charged, "It's just an extreme tragedy and this young man and the families of everybody involved is something they got to live with for the rest of their lives."

Sheriff Hinkle adds that a hunting accident like this hasn't occurred in Wayne County in several years, but he recommends that no matter how old you are or how long you've been hunting, that you should take a hunters safety course to prevent accidents like this from happening.

Who you refering to Tink? IF you are refering to my last comment dont mis read it. I am saying that you should always know your shot before you shoot. That is what I am refering to! Shooting at sounds it a total NON hunter ethic! I have been hunting for 12 years so I do know the ropes and I do know there are city boys that do this for a fact that I almost got shot on 52 acres of private property with a slug that hit a tree about 10 feet away!

Wow thats crazy. Makes me nervous hunting public land you never know who who's out there. I always try to walk in and out with a flashlight. I don't know how you could mistake a human for a turkey if he could see well enough to hit his target with his bow he should have been able to tell it wasn't a turkey . . .

Terrible!

Happens too much in my opinion. You never know what idiot is behind a tree on public land!

My approach! Since I can't keep the idiots out I do everything possible to prevent someone from shooting me.

1. If I have to walk in before daylight, I do so WAY before daylight or WAY after.

2. I always have a bright white light on my head!

3. While walking in or out I sing, cough, whistle, and talk to myself (rather loudly) until I get close to my spot.

4. I hunt in areas that other hunters tend to avoid.

5. I never carry an exposed turkey decoy or dead one on my back.

Back before widespread Hunter education guys would come into the bar an boast of having taken sound shots

"No I didnt see nutting but I heard sounds so I took a sound shot"

Ask the old timers.

Tink was not referring to you at all. He was making a broad comment about those who make sound shots.

And yes Tink, I've known a few guys when I was young, who would shoot into a moving bush, and brag about it later too.. I will not hunt with guys like that. There are way to many trigger happy people with weapons in the bush. I hesitate to classify them as hunters, because all they really are, is an itchy trigger finger shooter, with no brain.

This is truely a sad moment for both families. What we have here is a young hunter that made a horrible MISTAKE. Sounds like the shot was taken right at last shooting light and i am sure the kid thought that he had identified his target before he took the shot. This just goes to show that there is so much more that a hunter needs to know about the woods before he needs to be in them, more than they can learn in a safety class no offense. I spent many years in the woods with my father before i could hunt which taught me things like this. Lets all keep this kid and both families in our prayers.
