Swamphunter
About 15-20 years or so ago, my mother bought my Dad a Win Model 94AE 30-30. He used it for deer hunting for several years, but since then has not hunted due to health problems. I have never hunted with a 30-30 and my Dad asked me to dust it off and take it afield with me this year to kill some deer with. Here is my question.. What is a good bullet/ bullet weight combo for deer sized game in the northern woods. Our longest shot may be 125 yards.... Thanks
snapper
Without looking....I believe they are Winchesters...125 gr. hollow pts. Worked great outta my old .30-30 and did a number on a doe at about 75 yards!
m gardner
I always used 170 grain Remington factory loads or my reloads with 170 grain Speer flat points. Good penetration from any angle and plenty of energy out to 200 yards. Shot lots of deer with these two loads in the northern woods. Best rig I had was an old Marlin Sporting Carbine with a receiver sight. Mark

Hoosierbuck
I would go with bullets weighing 170-180 grains. Mine likes them all about the same. HB
Dakota
I always shot 150-170 grain bullets out of mine.
DocMort
why not go with the LE bullets, not sure if the gun would handle it you would have to make sure but they are deadly on deer
coles
Ive been shooting 150 gr federal fusions out of mine. Havent killed anything with it yet since i havent had my marlin long but if the 30-30 fusions perform like they do out of my 270 they will do great for ya
RangerClay
why not go with the LE bullets, not sure if the gun would handle it you would have to make sure but they are deadly on deer Why wouldn't it handle this load. It was made in the 1980's not the 1880's. I bought my .30-.30 17 years ago and it handles them just fine. Ken, I used to use Federal premium ammo with 180 gr. nosler partition bullets. I used them for years with great success till I bought the LeveRevolution shells. These things are awesome! I sight my .30-.30 at an inch high at 50 yards and they are dead on at 150. Gotta love a .30-.30 shell that only drops and inch over that distance. I have some pics of entrance and exit holes somewhere. Let me look around and see if I can dig them up. RangerClay
Here is an entrance hole from a LeveRevolution. The hole is the size of a 50 cent piece.
Adjam5
I have hunted with a 30/30 for over 20 years. I have used Speer Nitrex 150gr with great success, 11 deer. My son AJ also hunts with a 30/30. We sighted in his with the new lever revolution ammo and it prints real tight on paper at 100 yds. Ranger Clays post shows the performance of that load. Wow. LR ammo is supposed to be 1.3"high at 100 yds and .2 low at 200 and 12" low at 300. It is great use of the improved ballistics from the pointed bullet for the 30/30. They go on sale every now and then running $20/box.
