Oct. 3rd Smack Attack

Saturday afternoon was one of the most memorable bowhunting experiences I've ever had in the Mississippi woods.

My best friend Skip was off on his 2nd attempt to go after a 9 point that I'd gotten over 300 trail cams over the past month. I was going cold turkey into an area about 3.5 miles away where I'd let a head scratcher along with a lot of younger bucks walk last year. No trail cam pics to confirm any mature bucks were in the area.

About 5:00 word filters down to me that Skip had killed the 9 point. I was ecstatic! It's the best buck he's ever killed with a bow. Turns out the buck fell some 30 yards from his stand after a center heart punch at 15 yards.

Around 5:45 I catch a glimpse of a big bodied deer moving from right to left. I glass him right as he turns to walk toward me some 60 to 70 yards out. Shooter velvet buck coming! :jaw: As he approaches it becomes clear he's going to pass on my right side where I only had one shooting hole. I stand when he walks behind cover and watch him approach with bow in hand ready to draw. Just before he hits my lane I go to full draw and as he steps in it he turns directly toward me. OH NO...NO SHOT. That sense of panic strikes me now. He turns broadside again just as he gets near the edge of my lane. A montec tipped arrow is on it's way and hits home a little back and just a bit high of where I wanted it. Plenty good enough to do the job though. He crashes through a briar thicket and disappears. After waiting an hour I take up the trail. He made it about 100 yards before going down in a 20' ravine.

This is my 1st velvet buck. I've seen others but never one this big. I figured him to be 5.5 years old and after having my taxidermist pull the jawbone it also indicates he's 5.5. For the statistical guys he has 5" bases, a little over 20" main beams, 15" inside spread and falls a couple of inches short of P&Y. I am very VERY happy with my 1st trophy velvet buck.

Here's a pic of Skip and I togther with our Oct. 3rd bucks and a closer pic of my velvet trophy buck.

Way to go Buddy...I'm assuming these were off the lease?

Yep...our club in SW MS.

On my iphone again at our club. All the fawns seen still have lots of spots. Saw a 3.5 & 2.5 year old buck both still in velvet too. Took pics of the 3.5 right under me. Hope they come out with flash from that height. If so, I'll post pics when I get home.

Thanks everyone. I'll give the deer a break after this afternoon.
