WvBowhunterKE
Unfortunatley I cannot share any hunting stories with you as much as I would like to. But for the time being I can fill you in on what a hunter does in his spare time while in Iraq. A couple of the other mechanics and myself got the bright idea we would try and spear a few pigeons. ( They are literally everywhere over here ) After finding a few sticks from whatever kind of tree that they have over here. ( Nothing like I have seen before ) We took some of the spikes from our spike strip set and widdled them down. Placing the spike on the top of the tiny branches. Needless to say there was not much sucess. Though a friend of mine came close. He missed only by a few inches. We are not premitted to have Bows, Pellet Guns, Slingshots. Or anything of the sort. So we have decided to try anything possible. Not nearly as much fun as the real thing, but hey, its better than nothing I suppose. Tomorrow we are going to try and find a way to shoot something out of the air chuck. I will fill you in on the updates. Sorry this is not your everyday hunting story but I figured I would let you in on what we do over here in our past time.
bluelund79
Ah yes, the good old Iraqi pigeon hunts...When I was at BIAP in 03, our hanger was full of them(Kiowa Crewcheif). We used to catch them by hand and gently remove their heads. My 1SG used to work on a chicken farm so he showed us the finer points of it. It was alot of fun and provided some needed change from the MREs that we had to eat for the invasion. Brought back some good memories, thank you, and be safe... mikewink
Ahhh...yes. We used the air wand to shoot bearings. Actually, hit a couple. The things we did to pass the time. OIF 03-05 Stay safe brother, keep your head and tail down. Edited October 7, 2009 by mikewink
hungry hunter
Thanks for serving, when I was there in 1990,1991 we used to sharpen welding rods on each end and throw them. Some folks got lucky. Anyhow be safe.

WvBowhunterKE
Today was a bit of a downer, a few others and myself contiuned on the hunt today. Needless to say all of our attempts fell short. We attempted cutting a welding rod and shooting it from the air chuck. ( Not a good idea, wouldnt suggest it. ) The welding rod got jammed into the air chuck. :bang: I got goofing off by my motor sgt and got to do a little extra pt. not exactly my favorite thing to do. Well it was nothing a good pair of vise grips couldnt handle. After lunch we broke down and decided to just chuck rocks at them. Out of about a hundred attempts of trying to knock one out of the rafters I finally hit one! The only thing was it fell inbetween the two and I didnt see it for the rest of the day. Perhaps I got my first BPD ( Big Pigeon Down lol ) But I doubt it, tomorrow were going to try the welding rod idea out. If it worked for you hopefully it will for us. Im still a little suprised that back when you were here you could catch them by hand, if we even get within 20 feet of them they fly off. Im thinking about changing attempts, perhaps trapping some, the old trick of the shoe string and the box lol. Who knows, but trust me if I do score I will put some pics up for you guys. ( Knowing that most of the other people who would read this would be like..Who cares, its just a pigeon lmao.) And fill you in on the story. OUTSIDER
While i was in the Air Force we would get bored easily....we made a potato gun out of cast iron pipe and a propane tank, hooked the propane tank to the potato gun via flex hose, took two ball valves for safety to shut off the gas flow, filled the chamber with a 1 or 2 second burst of gas, then hit the grill ignitor we had fitted in the chamber. It would send taters far as you could see. Try this....get a peice of electrical conduit (if you have any or can get any) and make a sort of blow gun with the air chuck. Make projectiles and take the OD green duct tape ( i know you have some of that) and make a round ball so you get a good consistant shot, make it just smaller than the inside diameter of the conduit or pipe whatever you can find, shove it on the opposite end of the projectile, get creative, make vanes like on an arrow!!!! We did all kinds of goofy stuff. By the way, i am from WV as well.
acetum
lol, that's a good one. We made a flame thrower out of a shop-vac, it didn't last long but was good for a couple of minutes of amusement... Just use a real good rubber band (or a couple) and some paper clips. You'll be surprised at their range especially with two or three inline.. Just make sure you don't hit your finger IT REALLY HURTS!!
WvBowhunterKE
Wow thanks for all of the tips! Im def. going to try these ideas out. Dont think the motor sgt is going to like it too much but who cares. The mans from WV and says hunting is a waste of time...What an idiot!
