brent13
i'm thinking of buying a handheld gps to use when tracking animals, the last 2 times i went with my buddy at his hunting spot we got lost and took forever to find our way back.... looking for something not to pricey, just something to mark a few waypoints and get me out of the woods when we find the deer...... thanks
redkneck
This is all you need. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=1194193 I get my GPS out anytime I go into thick cover on a bloodtrail. You get into pine plantation, and everything looks the same. No way can a person maintain a sense of direction in that stuff.

backwoods07
I've owned a couple over the years and these guys made great suggestions. I used it when I hunted public land. I'm strictly a private land hunter and know my woods like the back of my hand!
GWSmith
I just sold a Garmin ETrex in the classifieds...your reasons are exactly why I originally bought it. The best part about having it was I could just take off and walk into unfamiliar land and hunt! When I was done all I had to do was push "Go To" and have my truck marked as the waypoint I wanted to go to...it will direct you right back to the bumper! I also used it to take me to the bottom step of my treestand ladder, having mark that as a waypoint, in the dark many mornings. What is really nice about that is you dont have to mark any trails with tape or anything;) Cautions: If your attempting to use it in heavy tree cover you may not get avery good sattelite lock...but all you have to do is find a small clearing and it works. There may be other models that get better reception in heavy tree cover but I'm just relating personal experience in some of the forests of New York. Even the cheap one has a good reciever and I've never had any problems even in the thickest cover.
