Luke, this is just too, too weird buddy. You must have ESP or something. I did THWACK a buck tonight. And what is really weird is I had to THWACK it twice. :jaw:

I know this story probably belongs in the bow-hunting room or in my Blog, but this post of yours is the perfect place for it.

I had so many deer in front of me tonight, I wasn't sure what to do.

They came out about about 1 hour before last light (early for a change). I had a spike go past me at 10 yrds first. Then I saw 7 other deer coming. Some doe's, fawns and a couple of bigger bucks. The does came first with the fawns and hung around in front of me eating grass. I could see the first buck coming, and he wasn't too bad. He's a genetic 2x2, 3-1/2 yrs old. I figured he'd be a nice one to take out of the gene pool, and a nice first deer for the season. He finally came and joined the rest in front of me, and I was waiting for a good shot. I glanced back, and thought maybe the other one was bigger, so I waited. Finally the other one showed himself at around 15 yrds, but he was 2 on one side and a really long spike on the other.

I turned my focus back to the first one, and he was now over to my right feeding away from me, at 20 yrds, with a good broadside shot. I pulled my bow back and settled the crosshairs. and the other deer (some at 10 yrds some at 20) didn't even notice. THWACK, it sounded good, and the buck turned and just walked quickly back across in front of me at 25 yrds, stopped and just stood there with it's head down. I knew I hit him good, so I just waited. The rest of the deer never even knew anything was up. He stood there for a good 3 or 4 minutes, then started staggering, and fell.

I thought..WOW cool, right in front of me. That doesn't happen very often. The rest of the deer were kind of startled when he fell, but slowly just went over to him to see what happened. Then moved off after a few minutes, just feeding as they went.

I looked over to my left where the deer came from, and saw a nice big buck slowly coming. I thought, Geesh, I may just get my very first double header bow deer.

The big guy was coming very slowly just feeding his way to me. Heck, about 20 minutes went by. I looked out at my buck that I shot, and figured he was dead by now, and all of a sudden, he lifts his head up, then drops it down again. Well, I figured, he's just taking a little time expiring. So I got ready for the other big boy.

Then the buck I shot lifts his head again and keeps it up for a minute of so. I thought about giving him another arrow in the back of the head, because that's all I could see because of the 1-1/2 foot high grass, but was concentrating on the other approaching big boy. The big buck was now only about 40 yrds from me, but out of view behind some tall grass.

I look over at my downed buck and he lifts his head again ...then..all of a sudden slowly gets to his feet.

Well, that was all I could take of that, so I drew my bow and gave him another arrow. Instead of a THWACK, I got a CRACK, and every deer (at least 12 in all now) heade back to the bush, included my now running downed but revived buck. :jaw::jaw:

So here it is, almost dark, and now I have to go and search for my deer, but I can't go yet, because he's obviously got a second wind and enough strength left to run.

I stood up real fast to try to follow him, running with all the other deer, but lost track of who's who in the dim light.

To top it off, my buddy Wilf, who was sitting about 100 yrds behind me, further up the stream, had a Monster in front of him at 30 yrds, and was just waiting for him to give him a good broadside shot, when all the deer over near me, ran back in that general direction and spooked his big buck too.

If I hadn't of had to make that second shot, Wilf would have got a real dandy buck tonight.

I think he's mad at me :clown::clown:

Well, I'm leaving the deer for the night, and going out to find it first thing in the morning. It couldn't have gone far...or could it. It may have even dropped in the feild while running back to the bush-line with the rest of the gang, and I just didn't see it fall. I guess I'll find out in the morning....DANG

So, how and why you came up with that smilie now, ...tonight, is beyond me buddy, and why you posted two THWACK.gifTHWACK.gifis even weirder. I mean..really weird. You freak me out ...LOL:)

Weird, I had an almost identical thing happen on my first doe last week. She hit the ground about 30 yards, so I got down, walked toward her, when she moved a little, I thought I'd back off and let her die. Came back 20 minutes later, and I ain't found that heifer yet! I just wish I'd put that second shaft in her now, but you just hate to have to do that.

Hope you get the recovery soon Steve.

Thats weird i think it's called ESP ....lol Good luck on finding your buck Steve :)

IRONIC that you said just those words...LOL

I was in the middle of cooking and it popped into my mind to give Steve a call and find out if he had found the buck yet..........

He was answering the phone as he touched the antlers for the first time!

He Found It!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He's taking some pictures now after taking a short break so he can show us all how thick the brush was that he went into after being shot.

He thanks everyone for the prayers that helped him find this Buckthumb.gif

OK, so I get out there at first light this morning. Lots of blood where the buck laid down the first time, but couldn't see any more after that. I wasn't even sure where he actually entered the woods, because there was 11 deer running away last night, and I lost track of who was who.

So I get into the woods this morning and it is so dang thick in there, this time of the year, that it's incredible.

So, I just started a grid search, starting along just inside the edge of the woods, and getting deeper in with each pass. I was searching for around 1-1/2 hours and starting to worry, I wouldn't find it, so I asked the Lord to please help me, because it was so thick. I walked about another 10 steps after that, looked up, and there he was. :):) First thing out of my mouth was Thank you Lord.

I pulled out the camera right where I stood and took this picture.

So I work my way over there, set my bow down, and my cell phone gobbles :clown:..LOL. Low and behold, it's my buddy Gary (GWSmith). All I could say was, "You know what ? ... I JUST found him when you called. " This is getting spooky eh ..LOL

Anyway, here he is. He's no brute, but like I said, it's another genetic 2x2 out of the gene pool down there and he's going to taste real good. :)
