jesse8953
What do you use to stop rain from going down the barrel? I found this http://www.gandermountain.com/modperl/product/details.cgi?i=402648&pdesc=Traditions_Muzzleloading_Rain_Gear_10_Muzzle_Mitts_10_Cap_Guards&cname=Accessories&aID=510K2E&merchID=4006&r=view but could I use something else?I don't know if a balloon or a small condom would work? We going out of state and if it rains,I don't want the rain down the barrel.Any ideas?
quigleysharps4570
I carry mine in the crook of my arm...never have had the need to cover the muzzle with a condom or tape.
FrontierGander
i just put my finger down the bore and it does a good job. Haha no, im kidding. Look for finger cots, balloons, condoms * although they are smelly and have a better use for something else* 99% of the time i carry the rifle barrel down. browtine2
Balloons or electrical tape will work fine and are cheaper than the rain gear ya buy online or in the stores.
DocMort
You can just carry it barrel down if you are using a good setup shouldn't be get wet. If it is a worry, small unlubricated condom or a small water balloon works well.
GWSmith
Plastic Wrap and Rubber band works all the time here in the rain forests of New York!
PA_RIDGE_RUNNER
I have used a bunch of things, Balloons, tape of several types, plastic wrap, sandwich bags and even the fingers cut from those yellow rubber gloves used in the kitchen doing dishes. Of course there are three things I absolutely hate and all three are hunting in the rain.
too_pointer
Get a small bag of black ballons, and you are good to go. They will last a lifetime for next to nothing. I like them better than tape, simply no left residue on the barrel. too_
Tink
When lived in Africa I bought some small black covers for rifle barrels. My black maid ask what they were for i told her they were condoms for he ANC officials and the president ( Communist Black Party) that control South Africa:bat: she thought I wa dead s erious and walked away. hungry hunter
Scotch Tape, never had residue and when you shoot it flys off.
MichiganHunter
I use either eletrical tape...(same as jim shockey)....or plastic wrap.....I have used eletrical tape more and more lately. I have been taking a the eletrical tape and cutting it to JUST cover the tip and plug the hole. I take an hour and make up a few at a time. I cut out like 10 or 15 with an exacto knife. and stick them to a small section of wax paper (waxy side) and put it in my carry bag. than if I shoot and reload I can peal off another one and put it on the gun. RangerClay
I have used the little black condoms that CVA makes and they were ok but I just use a piece of electrical tape now.

We going out of state and if it rains,I don't want the rain down the barrel.Any ideas? So does the "out of state" rain worry you more than the "in state" rain does? Just exactly what state are you going to with this worrisome rain? I know, I'm being a dic#. Thing is these threads are amusing. You're going hunting... it might rain, might not also. If it does rain water might go into your barrel, might not also. If it does go into your barrel what's it going to do, ruin your charge? If it does you have bigger problems than rainy weather, IE gas can penetrate smaller openings than water....so if water is getting to your charge around your bullet gas is escaping past it. I didn't answer it? If water is getting to your charge you have bigger problems, meaning it your MZ is in proper working order and loaded correctly you're good to go. If I remember correctly there a vid out there where they take a loaded gun and submerge it then shoot it. I had a couple of beers and was being a smartazz, sorry. I didn't mean to upset you or waste your time....

Perhaps you drink to much....or you drink enough and just shouldn't reply when your buzz-ed...it'll suck if you get banned for making a d!&% out of your self....just saying....at least you appoligised...lol and just so you know, I've seen adds where if you spray your self with some body spray and it'll turn you into chocolate and women will just eat you up...do you belive that too? Muzzeloaders are not a cartrage weapon and even a drop of rain on part of you poweder can and will dramatically effect your ballistic Characteristics and will wreck you pattern, it's easy to still soak a muzz and still get it to go boom but they dont show you the pattern after a water dunk on tv do they. SO for some people (including Jim Shockey, who has shot more animals with a muzz than most of us put together) water protection is a serious issue because we demand the maximum performance out of our hunting equipment, and any situation where we slack off and it causes us to miss or worse wound a deer is absolutely unacceptable. Given equipment fails, hunters flinch and deer jump. But when it's our fault for slacking off, some of us get a little frustrated..ya know. eletrical tape is still my recommendation Edited November 14, 2009 by MichiganHunter
LETMGROW
Actually, my wife came up with this. She takes a small snack sized " Zip-Lock " bag and slides it over the barrel. Then she zips it shut as tightly as possible. This has worked well for us all. We also found the remaining bags in the box were real handy for storing primers, bullets and other accessories. Simple, cheap and effective. Lynn

I don't know. I saw a really overweight, ugly women in Wally World the other day with a few kids, so I know I don't drink as much as some... While I don't have the income to travel the world paying others to put me on game like Mr. Shocky, I have over the last 23+ years of hunting killed, I'd say, 200-250 deer between the couple of states I hunt, most laied to rest with an MZ. Have a few nice deer on the wall. So, I just might not be such a slouch with a MZ. I've never used anything over the barrel, only employed a little common sense, like keeping the muzzle pointed down. Just my experience.
