Cougar ???

(turn up your sound)

This is from a few weeks ago. I felt as if I was just being a bit paranoid, but after looking up resent sighting of cougars in town here, I now know it was one, since there was a sighting that same week, just up the hill not 1 mile from here.

Here's the link to the sighting I found, which verified my suspicions. http://www.jetfm.ca/news/index.php?m=09&y=09&entry=entry090916-190108

Cougar Spotted?

Wednesday, September 16, 2009, 07:01 PM

A POSSIBLE COUGAR SIGHTING IN THE COMOX VALLEY EARLY TUESDAY EVENING. A RESIDENT WHO'S PROPERTY BACKS ONTO COURTENAY'S LERWICK NATURE PARK BELIEVES SHE SPOTTED THE BIG CAT AND ALERTED CONSERVATION OFFICIALS. NO WORD YET FROM CONSERVATION OFFICIALS ON THAT POSSIBLE COUGAR SIGHTING. COMOX VALLEY RCMP SAY THEY RECEIVED NO REPORTS OF THE INCIDENT BUT WE PASSED ON THE INFORMATION.

I also looked up cougar sounds here on the NET, and found a Purr/growl that was just too dang similar. I still get there hair standing up on the back of my neck thinking about that morning. That was just too close.

When I got up to look around, I could no longer smell the dead animal either. That, was the smell of the cat, from rolling in it's kill, and it was just behind me, on the other side of the stream. It must have been wondering what I was, sitting there, silently, until I got up briefly in the dark to try to look in the bushes behind me. That was when the sounds stopped and I only heard it once again, just a bit further down the stream. Thank God nothing happened.

This stream we sit beside is only about 3 feet wide, and I was sitting approx. 10 ft from it...LOL

Here is where the cougar sighting was in comparison to where I was hunting that morning. I was in the "Creek Blind"

Yeah, I'll definitely have eyes in the back of my head from now on down there Steve. I was a bit nervous field dressing my buck in that thick stuff the other day. I kept looking around and had my ears wide open...LOL :)

I know some of you think ol' buckee has way too many stories to tell at times, but I haven't told them all...LOL...and if you lived here and spent any amount of time in the woods, you'd have stories to tell too. :):)

What surprises me is how populated it is there! Glad you're here to tell the story buddy.

Yeah, this farm is right on the edge of one town and right on the edge of another. There are, as you can see, a lot of little green spaces for bears and cougars to get around. There used to be, not many years ago, a lot more green space around this farm, but the building boom here for the last 10 years has got us socked right in here almost now. This is Urban hunting at it's finest :) I have sole permission to hunt this property and permission to let on or boot off anyone I like. :)

I thought there was an attractive mature lady sitting behind you at ta restaurant or something, this is even more exciting. If you get caught and chomped on Twitter us what it feels like as it happens!

In all seriousness, that is the one animal that gives me the willies. The way they attack, you are down and done before you even knew you were in a fight. Much rather deal with a charging bear than a sneak attack from a cougar.

Watch your topknot, Buckee!

We have them down here too bud, you are one lucky guy..... I woulda had to go home and clean myself up...... We have one that runs the mile and a half that I hunt, gives me the willies when things move in the dark and I can't put my light on it. Had the feeling I was being watched more than once last year. My friend's place where I bowhunt had a 600 lb steer disappear last year. Tracks and sign of a rear attack on the ground where the steer slid. So I KNOW he's there and hungry, dad has seen it a couple of years ago walking the weep line of the timber at the bottom of my friend's drive. Watch your back, I definitely do...... KS

It would be nice if you were allowed to carry more than a Buck knife for extra protection during bowhunting season. Being that is Canada a handgun is probably out of the question and I think that really sucks.

That's right Leo. We aren't allowed to have handguns as back-up weapons, nor are we allowed to hunt with handguns.

I do carry bear-spray when I go hunting in a couple of my spots, but in reality, it really wouldn't be much good if surprised like I have been lately.
