To Tell or Not To Tell

I'm the type of hunter that likes to enjoy sharing stories with other hunters - even if there are no stories, just sightings.

The other day, while hunting a particular section at Willow Slough, I shared with a couple of fellow hunters some sightings that I saw (6 deer).

My friend said that he never tells anyone what he sees because he doesn't want others to begin hunting the same section. He doesn't want the word to get around that a particular section has a lot of deer.

For me, half the fun is the camaraderie that can be gained by talking about the hunt, what you saw, near misses - the big one that got away, etc.

What do you guys think? Do you tell or not tell others what you experienced on the hunt - if the person you are talking to can potentially be a "competitor" of public hunting space?

Sometimes I may not share my sightings in fear of someone slipping in on me. However when I am hunting with friends and people I trust our experiences when shared make the hunt much more enjoyable. May be harder to do on public land. If its hard to do when hunting with friends, find some different friends.

Always share my tales with my buds. Always honest too. I have one bud who tends to "embellish" his reports, so I never know what to take as truth or not from him.

Does that buds name start with "Ohio" and end with "Bucks"?:hammer1:

I share what I see with anybody who asks.

At our camp we have some "public" stands, those open to all members, and of course most of us have stands we have scouted and worked hard to put up that is by invitation only. We also keep a log of what we see so that we tally all the sightings at the end of the year. A few times I will delay entry into the log for a few days because I want to keep it a bit hush hush, but most of my friends I just tell them what I'm seeing, and vice versa. If I see something good and want to go back, then I get first dibs on the stand, and same goes for them. There have been times when there's been a jack#$% around though, and we'll keep mum. The kind of guy that sneaks down in the middle of the week and slips around to the food plots and never signs in which is club rule #1.

I tell people I've seen deer on the other side of an area I'm hunting....so when they go into it hopefully I'm on the side the deer they push come out on...LOL

It's public land so most of the time I'm there way early before the other guy so it dont matter they push them my way as it is!!!

I dont mind sitting there in the dark for awhile then hearing vehicles finally getting there, car and truck doors slamming, and deer hooves coming my way;)

I like talking hunting too and sharing my sightings with other, but ..if those others aren't my hunting buddies, I don't tell tell them "Where I hunt" :)

Wow!!

This is a very enlightening conversation we're having. I never even thought of NOT telling people about the day's hunt. I think I should reconsider given the feedback here and the advice of my friend. I seriously never knew that people did that. Now I'm questioning every conversation I've ever had with other hunters wondering if they were pulling my leg or not.

Thanks for the feedback, keep 'em coming if you haven't shared your preference

I don't hunt public land anymore but I still have to share our hunting club's land with 22 other members and their guest. We have 35 camp stands scattered throughout our club's 2,800 acres. Most members also have their own stands that are open by invitation only to other members. Every member has the right to put their own stand anywhere they want though.

I always share my sightings and stories with my buds. They do the same with me. We're honest with each other all the time too. There's honor amoung my buds so we generally give each other room. There's plenty of land to go around. We also help put each other on deer. My attitude is, hunting with good friends is a lot more fun when we all can participate in killing deer. My buds share that attitude.

My buds in our hunting club are also the ones that will help the 2 of us out that are responsible for getting our camp's projects done for deer season. We don't have mandatory work days so any work we get from any of our members is voluntary. The other members that only show up to hunt and never do anything at all beyond that to help out...well they are on their own and more than welcome to keep their secrets to themselves. I'll enjoy their company but I'm not going to share what I know because it's too much of a one way street.

I always tell my buddies eactly what I am seeing & where... they would never even think of moving in on me, nor I them. In fact I have been having a great year sighting deer & have invited some of my buddys to hunt my stands & they have yet to take me up on the offer.

Strangers on the other hand....its better to be a good listener than a good talker.

I'm always completely open and completely honest about what happens in the tree. To me, having my hunting partners take a deer is just as satisfying as me taking that deer. We all put in the same amount of work and I would never keep secrets or lie about something that I feel we all share a part of.

same here they can jack up 50 yards away it ok with me

I've hunted Ohio for 9 years now and some of my friends can't afford the price I :angel1: pay to hunt there or even know what part of Ohio it's in. Same thing with down east here, they just know that it's north of Raleigh somewhere.

Good hunting land is hard to come by now-a-days and advertising it's locations are part of my hunting stories. I do enjoy sharing my stories with them and others, but locations go into the "VAULT".

Loose lips invites company most times. I pretty much hunt on my own. It is tough enough as it is. I do share with my Realtree buds though! :)

Yep, this is so even on private property where folks will slip in and crowd you where they may be able to gain access and sometimes those folks will trespass.
