ryan1990
Got my first deer with a bow this mornin. It definatly wasnt pretty. I wasnt concerned with getting a big deer I jst wanted to get the first kill out of the way and fill the freezer. Well this mornin was my last chance to hunt for awhile so I was determined to get one. It was rainin pretty hard and I was soaked so I told myself I would sit til 9 and shoot the first sucker to walk by my stand. This young doe came in about 8:15 and I couldnt get her to stop so I took the shot while she was walking and she dropped in her tracks. I assumed I made a heart shot and sat back down to wait it out. The deer was jst layin there in a big puddle of blood for about ten minutes then all of a sudden started struggling to its feet, thats when I saw that I had hit her in the hip, she couldnt get up cuz her back legs wouldnt work. I realised she wasnt dyin anytime soon so I knocked another arrow and right as i squeezed the release she struggled to stand again, causing me to hit her in the same spot!:hammer1: I got sick of watchin her suffer so I climbed down and cut her neck. So I guess technically it was my first knife kill too lol. Anyways, not text book by any means but hey at least I filled the freezer and downed my fisrt one with a bow. edit:BTW the cool part is that I got my first bow kill at the same spot that my best friend who was killed in Iraq last year got his last! Makes it pretty special Edited October 13, 2009 by ryan1990
PotashRLS
They aren't all that way so don't worry. Congrats on your first.
Tominator
Well, things like that happen. I've spined 2 deer (both bucks now that I think of it). Both shots paralyzed the deer so I had to do follow up shots on both of them. Not pretty watching a deer try to crawl away on their front feet for sure. Gator
They aren't all that way so don't worry. Congrats on your first. That sums it up right there. I hit my doe in the spine this weekend, and ended up having to cut her throat as well.
backwoods07
When arrows fly, that kind of stuff happens sometimes. Be glad you were able to put the animal down and it didn't get away with a broken leg. Congrats on your first! Like they said, they aren't all like that. Was not pretty pulling the arrow out to use the broadhead to slit its throat. I was just a kid, and you live and learn to make that more and more rare every year, but it's never a sure thing. Congrats on a kill, ugly or not. Sorry about your friend.
mikewink
You know sometimes things happen for a reason. If it happened any other way would it be as memorable! Congrats! 2 arrows! One for you! And 1 for your fallen friend! Those arrows would go on my wall!!!

jdavis
Sounds very similar to my first bow kill. I hit her a little far back in the spine and she crawled into some brush before I could get a second shot. I ended up climbing down from my stand and putting another arrow in her. Wasn't pretty but it's better that wounding one I guess. Congrats on your first kill.

Turkeygirl
Congrats! My very, very first bow kill, the deer moved as I shot and I hit her in the back...cut the femoral artery so she bled all over the place...had to track her down and finish her off. We all learn from our hunts though so take it as a learning experience and congrats!

Swamphunter
It certainly does suck when you don't make the shot that you have practiced hard for, as cleanly as you are capable of. It happened to me early this year, and even though I made the recovery fairly quickly, its a sickening feeling for sure. Just have to remember that you finished the job relatively quick and she didn't go to a painful agonizing death by infection and or coyotes. Practice even more, try to analyze what caused your hit and work to prevent it from happening again. I learned all about hand torque on a grip this year.... m gardner
With all the talk about harvesting deer and taking deer and being politically correct so no one is offended, like cleaning up the animal and putting it's tongue back in before pictures are taken etc. add nauseum we forget that we are trying to hurt something bad enough to kill it. And sometimes it takes awhile. I think you did a good job on your first kill. Congratulations, you got the job done. Mark
ruttinbuc
Bow hunting is full of lessons. You learn something every time out. Either about the game you hunt or about yourself...WTG on your first deer!
LifeNRA
Yeah I know what your talking about. My first bow kill, I spined a six pointer. I never knew I could climb down so fast! Nocked another arrow and finished him off. I hope I never do that again!
