carolinakidd
to you while you where in the woods?? It's close to Halloween so.... I ask this question because I am usually not easily spooked, but I a deer got me this morning...I stayed up all night watching ghost hunters, and paranormal state, and decided at the last minute to head to the stand. I get there about an hour before daylight, and ease down into the swamp bottom which was dead calm, and wet from yesterdays soaking. When I get to my tree, and start to hang my climber,I hear something that sounds fairly close. When I turned around with my light,I had two big Green eyes staring at me at about 30 yards.I knew it was a deer, but my light wasn't strong enough to pick up the entire body.Just those eyes. The crazy part was instead of running away this deer starts walking directly towards me in a quick trot, and came within 10 yards of me before it ever veered away...I saw it was a big doe, after it got close, but that 20 yards in between freaked me out a little...I was about to attempt to climb that tree backwards.. I also had some idiot on public land about 10 years ago walking around hanging crosses in the trees that he made out of 2 limbs and vines....that was a little creepy also. MCH
Walking to my stand 45 minutes before daylight and finding a black bear right beside it, fifty yards away. We had about a 5 minute standoff. Armed only with my bow, I didn't have the guts to "shoo" him away. Finally I took a step to the side and he started moving away from my stand. BTW--this happened last Saturday.
MichiganHunter
ok, I dont tell people cause i dont want people to think i'm a wacko but here it is. I was bow hunting a secton of state land I had not hunter before, I packed in a climbing stand and found a tree and shimmied up it...well at about sunrise I heard dogs barking and a lady talking...I was like CRAP, i'm too close to some peoples house, but i saw a deer and decided to just wait it out (thinking that i was still on state land just close to private). as it got closer to like 10 I climbed down and chould still hear the lady and some kids playing. Well i left and went home and looked up the property on my map program and determined there was no way it was a house, so I went back that afternoon to see if there were some people camping chouldn't find anything, founds some rocks but that was it. later I found out from the dnr officer who works in the area that the state got the property from a MURDER CASE...a guy went nuts killed his dogs, his wife and his daughters and then comitted suicide, no one claimed the property so the state got it and turned it into state hunting land.....at this point I was basically pooping my self in front of the officer...and then just to make me really poop my self he explaind where the old house use to be and guess what, I was hunting about 200 yards from it (more or less) and the rocks I found wile walking....you guessed it, the old home foundation......ya i pooped my self. Other than that one, I whould say steppin on a phesant durring gun season in the dark...thats a close second......I did poop then too

MNcrittergittr
Lol...I'll tell ya what, I hunt in areas with bear, cougars, wolves you name it. I've grown up in the woods and on the water, seen a lot of really cool stuff and have a lot of experience and great memories. I don't get rattled easily, but I remember being a kid goin out to the stand sometimes my mind would wander and I'd think of what could happen ya know....kinda funny. A couple seasons ago my little brother and I were bowhunting in a groundblind and we got out there long before sun up. And at night a lot of times we can hear wolves and coyotes howling in the not too far distance. Well we just get set up and are sitting there settling in when we both here something walk up the ridge behind us, not being able to see yet we froze hoping that maybe if it were a deer it would hang around long enough to get a decent glimpse of it. The sound of crunching leaves just keeps getting closer and closer til I hear something put it's nose on the blind. At this point we can each see the animals breath coming in from the outside of the blind between us. Then it starts growling, a pretty throaty growl too. We both puckered up and I think both of our eyes got about as big as soft balls. After it started growling, it circled the blind a couple times and that's when I knew it was smaller, because it was right next to the blind and I couldn't see it. I thought maybe a fisher or a fox. Needless to say my arrow was nocked and my hand was on my knife. It got about 20 yards out and started barking (like a fox)...Soon enough it got light enough to see a gray fox in the distance barking at us. Not the freakiest situation ever, but it was a little different, and I know my little brother was spooked there for a few lol. Another guy I know went up to his cabin one weekend, opened the front door when he got there and found a black bear right in the middle of the cabin that had climbed in through one of the back windows. He now wears a black bear tooth necklace. Edited October 15, 2009 by MNcrittergittr

redkneck
If you do a search for strangest thing or weirdest thing, you'll find several threads on this subject. For me it was probably the time I got drilled in the chest by an owl late one evening on a stand after I reached up and scratched my chest. dbHunterNY
It was when I first started hunting and I actually had a gun and wasn't bowhunting. It was a new moon so it was pitch black out and I couldn't see a thing period. I was sitting on the ground at the base a of pine tree and for the first time I heard a fox screaming, screeching, whatever you want to call it. lol I couldn't see enough to tell where it was at all, let alone shoot it. It stayed within what, I'd bet money on was probably bow range while circling around me. I heard while seeing a fox make this noise down the road to varify others telling me it was a fox. It was unnerving though. Another story... my parent's neighbors brought a hunter from out of town for the first time to hunt their land. They sent him into the woods before dawn. Well the guy didn't know the neighbors and my parents lived very close to a zoo that has a lion called Leo. Well sometimes at dawn Leo tends to stretch and roar. Well he did, the guy heard it, and late morning the neighbors found the guy back in the truck with the doors locked. He'd been there before the sun even peeked over the horizon. lol
fly
Here in S. Illinois the only phesant hunting is stocked places. Generally they are packed with hunters. As a teen I was hunting in our designated area walking the edge of some standing corn. All of a sudden several birds flew up. I didn't have a shot, but I heard gun shot from the other side of the field (maybe 75 yards away). Then I heard the first wave of pellets coming through the corn. Luckily it was cold and I had a big coat on. I turned and took the shots to the back. I wasn't hurt, but it sure scared me. Now walking through standing corn always spooks me. ultratec1
I remember 4 yrs ago I was hunting one of my favorite spots that I waited to hunt with the right wind. I snuck in and got set up and waited. After a night of good activity I went to leave, as I walked across the picked cornfield I hear something behind me in the stalks. I turned around and it stopped, I walked and it started again. I walked faster and no matter what, it was always right behind me. I was really starting to worry about what the heck it was, I turned quick and I hear the thing to my left. I then start to look around in the dark with no light trying to find out what it is. After a few minutes I take off on a jog and I hear it again. I get out of the cornfield and in to the grass strip and then I see it. Its white and it is hoping and jumping after me, I take off running and its on me no matter what I do. I turn around to kick it and thats when I realize what it was, and at that moment I told myself that I would never tell anyone what happened that night. it was my dang drag rag I had wrapped around my boot walking in. I forgot I put it on and it was about to be the death of me that night!!! Had to wash my scent lok that night because i was sweating so much from be paranoid and the fact my fat butt was running with 1200 gram lacrosse boots. AaronS
There was a very long post on this subject in the Michigan Sportsman forum a few years ago. Some great stories...some very creepy....you Michigan guys must have all the evil spirits up there. Mine....I was blood trailing a bowshot doe after dark one night a few years ago by myself, with a quickly fading flashlight, down in woods that I hadn't even been in during daylight. After I get a couple hundred yards down in the woods, I see a set of eyes about 30 yards away looking at me. I assumed it was my doe. Since it appeared to still be alive, I did what any hunter that wants to ensure his deer doesn't get away would do....I rushed it. When I got there, the eyes were gone, and I never heard anything run away. I assume it was probably an owl, but it spooked me for a short while. Turkeygirl
It was my 2nd year deer hunting, and it was shotgun season. I go to get in a burlap ground blind Andy had made and there is a scrawny raccoon in a tree crotch right at my blind. So I stood there waiting for it to meander off. Andy had seen it there before. Finally it left and I got in my blind. All I could think of was rabies, lol. Luckily I forgot the raccoon when the neighbors started world war 3 in the fields, and a nice doe came by and that's when I got my first deer ever! ToddCountyKiller
My buddy hunts on haunted land. He took me out once and he told me that if I saw anybody not to yell at them or be rude. I asked him if someone else was hunting and he replied with a " you could say that". About 4 o'clock I had made a bad shot on a doe so I decided to sit in the woods for the remainder of the day to let it lay down. Well up in the tree and it was about to get dark but I could see just enough, here come someone walkin through the woods in black. And now I couldnt tell wha they had black on, but I could tell it was loose fittin, had a facemask on and they were walkin slow. I assumed someone had a ground blind near and they were gettin outta the woods. Well they stop, nealt down beside a rock like they were praying. I was freaking out thought they were having problems so I asked out, " Hey mister you needing some help?'' No answer. So I asked out again "Raise your hand if you need my help". Well the dark figure stands up, turns toward me and looks up at me. Well I couldnt really see and I had a REALLY bright flashlight so I shined it down there. WOW! It was someone super white. Im talkin caspers cousin white, with jet black eyes and wearin a dress in all black with the funeral black mask that most wemon wear. Dude my light went straight off, and as soon as it did. This person lets off the loudest scram I have ever heard! Im talkin LOUD! I look back down at them, and they're gone... Well thinkin it may have been my bud puttin someone up to it, I shrugged it off and climbed down in the dark to find my deer. Well I go to call my buddy. No cell service! And I just had it before I climed the tree ealier in the same spot. So I was feelin weird. So I got my flashlight out, lookin for blood when all of the sudden I see somethin blck run by me and smacked the flashlight outta my hand, it looked to be the same person from earlier! So Im freakin out by now. I looked for my light thinkin the person knocked my bulb loose or something, didnt find it and it was pitch black darkness! Well I start cussin the person sob and what not, when my pal walks up and he covers my mouth. He told me to please be quiet he dosent want to upset "her". I told him yea right it was him and if it wasnt how did her get here from his stand so fast. He said it wasnt him and that he herard the scream. I blew him off thinkin it was him. Never found my light. So we're wlakin out of the woods and he tells me the story. A woman and husband and kids uesd to live up by the road. And there house burned down a long time ago. It burned down and one of the kids got burned real bad. And they didnt have the money to take him to the hospital. So her and her husband killed the kid.! And they didnt think it was fair for the little girl to be alive so they killed her too!!! they went out into the woods and buried the kids. Well the police found out that the kids were missing and the parents went on for ever sayin the kids burned up in the fire. But the old woman was afraid that her husband was goin to tell the cops the real story so she shot him too! Well to keep his murder down he buried him somewhere else and she went down to the location of her kids grave and she tied a concrete block to her leg and drowned herself in the deep pond on the side of the property!! And it just so happends she comes out at dark to see her kids every night. My buddy says he has followed her. She comes out of the lake right at sunset and roams through the shadows to her kid sgrave. And that he has pissed her off before too. Well we stop by the rock the woman was knealing at and it said beloved kids!!!!! Im feaking out while were walking out of the woods thinkin shes gonna get me. So right as we hit the grassy feild I said low " I'm sorry lady". Well we get to his house and talk for a bit. I drive like a bat outta you kno what home. And my little cousin is there. Hes very young. He comes up to me and said a woman came up to him in the yard. She gave him this flashlight and told him that it was mine to give it to me. Well it just so happens this was the light I lost in the woods!!! I asked him what she looked like he said I dunno it was dark but she was wearin a black dress like mommy wears when someone passes away!!!!!!! Till this day I will never hunt there again!:disolve:

Stinger-Hunter
Hunting Virginia's George Washington National Forest I walked in the day before and camped on my hunting spot about 600 yards into the woods. I slept most of the night, but the first time I woke up - Pitch black not even star light or the moon, no sound at all; no cars, no passing planes, no animals, no birds, - zero sound. the only time I experienced that was laying in a float tank that is filled with salt water at body temperature, no light, no sound. You just float there with no external stimuli. Weird experience. I wake up and sit on my rock and as light shines, I hear footsteps behind me. again, then again a few seconds later. Right behind me. I'm thinking a deer or a bear. I slowly turn and there is nothing there. Again I hear it coming closer, scrunch, scrunch. I look again, there is nothing. I'm freakin' at this point cause it is 20-30 yards away. After about 5 minutes, I see a doe and a buck coming down the large hill in front of me. The doe's footsteps were echoing across the ravine so her footsteps as she made her way down the hill toward me, could be hear from behind me. Never thought to think of that possibility. -- Another time I was hunting in Marion county Indiana (in Indianapolis) along this stretch near a creek. Just across the stree was a grocery store and behind me was Cathedral High School. I see a flash of white as I'm doing a little spot and stalk. I position myself on a trail and wait. Then I see a couple dogs running toward me, then the flash of white again. I thought a few dogs were chasing a deer. Looked like some people had dumped their dogs in the woods and they formed a little wild dog pack - but they were all domesticated-type dogs of different breeds. Some small, some larger. They all gathered in front of me - even after I whistled and made my presence known. I had an arrow nocked and then the alpha dog came to the front - bigger, meaner. I pulled back and yelled something like get out of here - As soon as he showed his teeth and growled, I shot him in the chest, luckily. He screamed and rolled and yelped as loud as I've ever heard anything and it echoed and carried - must have been heard by 50-100 people dropping their kids off at school or shopping. the thing is that he didn't die. He took off yelping. I waited about 5 minutes and began trailing the blood. There was so much blood, I could smell the iron in the air as I walked. I found him at the other end of a drainage tunnel underneath the street that led to the high school. He was still breathing. as I walked toward him, he got up (took awhile) and walked up to the street, heard a door slam a minute of two later and never saw him. I assumed someone took him to a vet, but can't be sure. I shook for quite some time after that. Being attacked by wild dogs is one thing, having that pack look like a compilation of disney movie character dogs and then not finding the dog - WoW. She had this really intent serious look on her face as she read, and all of a sudden broke out in laughter, like I haven't heard for a while. :clown: ________________________________ One of my spooky encounters was one time when I was hunting a piece of property for deer, that has a lot of bears on it also. I parked the truck, and started across a small field to the gate that enters the bush. As I approached the gate, I noticed a black figure along the bush-line about 40 yrds from the gate. I kept an eye on it and sure enough it was a bear standing there watching me. By the size of it, I guessed it to be about a 3 yr old. It was dark and all I could see was a good silhouette. I got to the gate, and lost sight of it for a few seconds while I unlocked the chain that holds the gate closed, and quietly put the chain through the wire. I then back up a bit to see where the bear was at, and it was still standing in the same spot. "Good", I thought to myself, and moved forward, opened the gate quietly, and entered the small cut road that goes through the bush. I went to turn around to close the gate behind me, when all of a sudden, something took off through the woods, right off of the trail inside the gate in front of me. Crashing through the brush like a freight train and my heart was in my throat. It stopped, and I thought I could see a bear silhouette about 8 feet off the ground, partially up a tree. I took a step forward to get a better look, and realized it wasn't up the tree at all, but it was a humongous black-bear just standing there, watching me, at about 20 yrds. :jaw: I yelled "GET" and it took off making all kinds of racket. So much for quietly sneaking into my stand..LOL
Doe-ee
That is one of the funniest things I've ever read! I tried really hard to read it to Steve but after every line I just burst out laughing again. :clown: The "down to earth" honesty of the whole story makes it even better. Made my day at work very enjoyable. Thanks.

va hunter
I was walking to my stand one morning and heard something running through the woods I thought it was just deer. Well it sound got closer and closer and thought to my self deer do not run towards you so i stopped and shined my light and noticed that there was a mama black bear and behind her was two cubs. I stared at her and she stared at me the cubs took off running the other way and shortly after so did the mama. This was during late muzzleloading season and i didn't even have a cap in the breach.
