ALAN
what kind of knives do you guys carry with you when in field??
wyohunter
im a knife nut and i carry way too many with me afield.... all you really need is one, pointed enough to cut the butt out, yet have enough spine to rip the chest cavity, or use a couple different ones, i use a schrade with a gut hook, and a folding saw blade knife the most, and with these two types, its plenty for a deer

backwoods07
I use an 8" Gerber bone saw and a special edition Buck knife. Sharpen it before you hit the woods and a good knife wll stay sharp enough for whatever you need to use it for.
m gardner
I have a Knives of Alaska Alpha Wolf and a Cold Steel Master Hunter. I check knives before I buy them by holding the knife comfortably with my right hand and closing my eyes and seeing if I can touch the end of the blade with my left forefinger. If I can I know I won't be cutting myself if I'm working after dark or with my hands in the body cavity where I can't see the blade. If I can't I won't buy it because I know I'll eventually get hurt because the knife has an unnatural feel to me. I sharpen with a carbide scraper I made. Little carbide tools are available at most sports stores and are easy to carry and need little skill to use effectively. I carry light Kevlar gloves too if I'm planning on quartering and boning a large animal. Mark
Shawn
I carry a 6 inch Old Timer Knife with gut hook on the tip. Ive gutted 2 deer in the same morning with it, without sharpening in between. Holds a great edge.

m gardner
My girlfriend is very challenged when it comes to sharpening knives and uses the Smith carbide sharpener for all the kitchen knives(my Henkels!) with great success. It's about $5.00. Best is to find someone who knows how to sharpen a knife and have them show you how. Mark

tp793
I carry a Silver Stag gutter. Thinking about getting a less expensive one to carry into the field because I'm always afraid of losing it. Holds an excellent edge though and have gutted four deer with it without sharpening it. Jeramie
how do you guys sharpen them when ur in the woods if they need to be sharpened Spend the money on a CutCo.... You wont need to re-sharpen in the field. They are AMAZING knives. A little on the pricey side but worth every penny. They also have free sharpening for life as well as a lifetime guarantee. If you have even a piece of the blade left they will replace the knife. We bought some for out kitchen too. They are truly a great product.
