Thanks guys. It was a great hunt. When I saw him come into the field, the sun was right at the horizon. I was facing straight west into the glare. So I was trying not to look that way. All of a sudden I felt this big shadow come across the field because of the sharp angle of the sun it was across his profile. I looked up 275-300 yards away and there he was going directly across the field.

In the field are some mature oak trees. He stopped at one and stood on his rear legs 3 times to grab a branch with his mouth and pulled it down then scraped. I grunted and he looked over at me, but was not interested.

He continued to the opposite edge of the field. I was panicked that he would just go in the woods and leave. I grunted a few more times. He would look but then scrape each time. Thrash the branches. At one point he just grazed for about 10 minutes.

I grunted one last time. He then came the final 75 yards right to me. At 20 yards I shot him. All he did was flinch slightly and walk about 10 yards to the corner of the field. He stood there for a few minutes as I prepared for another shot. (I learned I need a better follow on shot ability with arrows!) He walked the remaining 10 yards into the edfe of the woods and then just stood there for a few more minutes. Now I had no shot. Then he got weak kneed and tipped over.

He was only like 30 yards away and within sight! It was such a great hunt. The repeated grunting then scraping and then comming closer was so exciting. This is what brings people like us back to the woods every year!! I was blessed tonight!

Here are some before pics!!

this is my first taxidermist worthy deer. I'm shopping now for a good one. If anybody can recommend any in the ST Louis, MO area, thanks. I can't wait to post my mount here when I get him back.
Congratulations! Great Buck! IL or MO? I'd say smack is right on with 145 gross. Unfortunately his left G-5 will not count for the net score, but he'll still make P&Y easy! I'll say 137 net. Not sure what you want to spend? Schwartz in St. Louis is one of the best, but also really expensive. Mark Short (Buck Fever taxidermy) in Brighton IL. does my taxi work now. I'm very happy with his work and he only charges $350.00 for a full shoulder mount. Below is my 08 buck he did for me. Got it back a couple months ago. His turn around time is about 8-9 months. His shop is about an hour from St. Louis, but worth the drive in my opinion. Shoot me a PM if you need more info.
