Stinger-Hunter
I say this every year, "From now on i'm not hunting the first 3 weeks of October" and then every year, I'm out there on October 1st - only to be frustrated from weeks. I'm going to Montana tomorrow to take a break from Bowhunting - I'm going antelope hunting with my big hockin' 30-06. I will shoot something, dang it! I make that promise. Some animal is eating one of its last meals!!!!

redkneck
Dude, October rocks! Besides the mosqitos, it's one of the best months to hunt. It's gotta be right up there with November, Dec, and Jan anyway!
arrow32
I love hunting october but then again there ain't a month that I don't like to be hunting.
MUDRUNNER
I feel ya! I tend to be so pumped for the season to start I tend to get myself burnt out a little before November gets here. The funny thing is I've never killed a deer before the last week in October.
Tominator
October lull. Too late to catch them in the summer/eating phase, too early for the rut. I don't miss October hunts like I miss November hunts. I get bent out of shape if I can't hunt in November.
Rhino
I'm with redkneck...October Rocks!!! The only issue here is putting up with the afternoon heat for the 1st couple of weeks or so. Didn't bother the mature 8 point I killed on Oct. 3rd. Saw a 130 class 9 point Saturday afternoon along with 5 other younger bucks here in MS. No shot opportunity but I sure enjoyed watching them. Smacked a doe at 15 yards Sat. morning too during the first cool weather we've had. Time to head to the midwest now and hunt those late Oct. bucks before the November hunters hit the woods. :D:D
Tony
i have to agree, Oct is a great time to hunt and its a really great time to hunt if you see one like this before the season.. the weather most of the time is great and its just a good time to be in the woods. good luck with the antelope. i was out in Wyoming in sept and i shot 2 with bow. Stinger-Hunter
Just venting a bit there guys. I'd rather be in the woods in October than anywhere. Much frustration, though. To be honest I would have two right now, maybe three if circumstances were a little different. Shot one, never found her. Had 6 within 25 yards, but branches were in the way, and snuck up on 2 does and they bolted at the last second. Anyway, I'm off to Montana - should have some great pictures. fly
Good luck in Montana! Yea the October lull is something I'm just finding out about. However, my second biggest buck was a 161 inch shot on October 12th in 06. I saw 16 deer that evening. This year I've yet to see more than 2 deer on any hunt and I've yet to see anything with antlers. The more I go and see nothing, the more special it makes it when I go and do! backwoods07
I hear ya. Every year we say the exact same thing. I'm in your shoes! I'm goin to Phoenix tomorrow to lay out by the pool for a couple days.
Bloodtrailer
october is amazing, you get to see the deer prior to pressure in their natural habitat...i shot my buck and still try to hunt every night after work just to watch deer and see the rut start to take action. i am addicted. westernNYhunter
yeah the rut here in western NY is NOT happening, its very weird because we've already had half a foot of snow and 2 very solid frosts happen. im very new to bow hunting but what is the BEST sign to look for to know the rut in kicking in? my uncle said the rut around here starts about Nov 1st and yowl notice the bucks moving more during daylight and hanging around the does. Idk, figured i'd ask the experts
HUNTINGMAN
I don't beleive in the oct lull,I have killed most of my deer in oct. Just find those hot acorn trees and hang out for a while, the deer will come.
