coles
Does anyone know anything about this cartridge? I was just reading about it at work today and it sounds like a neat one. Almost identical ballistics as a 280 but in short action. It just sparked my interest and i was wondering if anyone has one, knows anything about them, and if any Rifle manufactures chamber rifles in them now. I couldnt find anything in our catalogs about a company producing any but i really really want one now.
doubleA
The 284 Win was one of the first short mag type cartridges though it's not considered a magnum. It's fatter case body and rebated rim were ahead of it's time and simply wasnt marketed right in my opinion for it to catch on . You are correct in saying it's basically a 280 Rem in a short action cartridge. Winchester brought these out in their M88 and M100 rifles. I dont recall if they ever offered the 284 Win in a SA M70. The wildcats based off the 284 Win have surpassed the original in popularity. I have a 6mmx284 and 6.5x284's which are basically just necked down with no other changes. The 6mmx284 is just shy of the 240 WBY in ballistics and the 6.5 version it know for it long range capabilities and popular with the 1000yd shooters. While the 284 Win will do anything that the 270 Win and 280 Rem will in a short action, gun company's have neglected it for years. Yes, Winchester, Savage and Ruger all built factory rifles in it and or course you can get custom barrels chambered but it's pretty much a thing of the past. Winchester is the only company I think making brass for the 284 making it harder to find but not impossible. Norma and Hornady make brass for the 6.5x284 which BTW can easily be necked up to .284 cal. Nowdays we have the mild mannered 7mm-08 which is also a sleeper. I think the 284 Win is a a frog that never was kissed and made into a prince and it should have been.
coles
My dad and I do alot of reloading and if i got something chambered for this round thats probably what i would primarily do. The store i work for has Factory Winchester ammo with 150 gr softpoints but they are $43 a box. The round just intrigued me and im goin to do alot of research on it. It would just be cool to have a rifle that not many people have.

hunterbobb
I was in your exact shoes 25 years ago. I spent 20 years looking for a Winchester Model 100 chambered in 284 that was in decent shape that I could afford. Five years ago I finally found one. It has turned out to be everything I hoped it would be. Good luck on your search I hope you find one soon. :gun2:

Shaun_300
I seen that cartridge in my reloading manual and also liked the ballistics, looks like a very versatile cartridge for pretty much anything. I just took a quick look on gunbroker.com Cole and came across this custom 700 in .284. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=143706195
