PAbowhunter4life
Well, I went out and shot a few more rounds today from the old 835. The Star Dot .676 w/ Winchester XX 3" #6 (2 oz.) combo did fine for me. Once again 25 in the head/neck area at 40 yards with 12 exactly where they need to be. I moved back to 50 yards to see how much it opened up and I wound up with 12 in the head/neck area with 5 exactly where they need to be. Granted that's not much at 50 yards, but that's plenty to kill an old tom. I know my load has plenty of power to take a bird out to 40 yards, and from the way the wood I had my target posted on tonight reacted, it has plenty of oomph at 50 yards too. However, before I allow myself a 50 yard shot I want to do some penetration tests and that is what my question is based on. What would represent a turkey head accurately for penetration comparisons? I was thinking of shooting an orange or 2 at 50 yards, but I wanted to see if anyone else has done this and might suggest something other to use. If I had the money I'd use ballistics gelatin, but unfortunately there is a bottom to the check book. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!! LifeNRA
Re: Testing Material............... How about a un-open soda can? If you can get the shot to pass through the can, it should be leathal on a turkey. Just a thought!
HeviShot
Re: Testing Material............... How about playdough or clay formed around a small wooden dowel. The dough would be the skin and the dowell would be the bone.Never done that but it might work for ya. PAbowhunter4life
Re: Testing Material............... I was actually just reading a sight that suggests using cans like you mentioned. They also suggested soup cans and coffee cans. Thanks for the suggestion bud.
