West Virginia DNR.....made a big mistake...

Our wonderful know it all game biologists of the WV DNR made a big mistake and liberalized our doe harvest in the southern counties to the point where they have to shut doe hunting down in southern WV......they made a money racket out of the deer herd and there are many areas that are way overharvested and will take a long time to rebound...I hunt in Fayette County and the deer herd was in no way overpopulated and there was big healthy deer here the DNR sold unlimited permits and us weak hunters bought them now we have very few to no deer to hunt....13 counties are proposed for shut down of doe hunting hopefully the new DNR boss will help our deer hunting rebound not destroy it...very sad.

vtbowhunter, hopefully the weather will stay mild and we have no winter kill......but the county I hunt (Fayette) has the highest populations of coyotes in the state....now we have to worry about predatation as well...there is no keeping coyotes in check...just tolerate them, and shoot them when you can.

wvbowhunter - I feel your pain! I live in Raleigh county but I hunt in Kanawha.. both being counties affected by this whole situation.

I looked at the front page of the paper today and wasn't really surprised in the least. I knew something was going to have to happen after the past couple years of hunting. Neighboring property to where we go has unfortunately been HEAVILY hunted the past few years and we are seeing fewer and fewer deer. They are obviously taking advantage of being able to fill 9? tags.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a mild winter for the rest of the year. Kanawha county really doesn't get much of a winter anyway, but most of the other counties can't catch a break from the snow.

Alisha, glad to see another WV hunter on the forum.....you being from Raleigh County know our deer hunting took a beating the last two years, I don't know what was on there minds (DNR) I guess the money made them do it because our deer were in no way overpopulated...we have a new head man over the DNR (Frank Jezioro) sp? hopefully he will turn things around since he hunts and goes afield and talks to hunters...not siting behind a desk making regulations...I guess time will tell.

Re: West Virginia DNR.....made a big mistake...

Had pretty liberal seasons here in TN this year. Think they had good intentions, not so sure if the outcome however is going to be what they were attempting to accomplish. Around here with the increase in the limits they are looking to really decrease the herd size. Some counties needed it terribly, but some did not.

And I hunt in BarBour and Harrison counties there and have since the late 90's. I pay the out of state license fees to hunt there..its definitely worth it...a very big herd of healthy deer. I have seen the DNR in West Viginia begin to restrict the doe harvest there in the last couple years.

Sounds like your DNR there has been making some poor decisions..I commiserate...I live in New York crazy.gif

Yep they are doing the same thing here in PA! The DCNR wants even more deer shot off. Because they are saying the deer are killing the tree's. I personally think its BS. Now the DCNR has hired an outside group to fly around at night, and count the deer using night vision. Sounds like even if they dont get the numbers they want, they could easily inflate the numbers!
