Missilelock
Theres just nothing better that carrying your stand in on your back for 1/2 mile, then having some lazy idiot drive by under your treestand 4 times in the last 2 hours of daylight on private property roadhunting in his atv. Private ground that he has no permission to be on at that. I cant tell you how many pieces of great hunting property I have lost access to because ATV operators p***ed off the landowners. sorry for the rant- kinda had a bad evening here!!! Ravin R10 man
Why would you walk half a mile in, just to set up by a road??
Strut10
I cant tell you how many pieces of great hunting property I have lost access to because ATV operators p***ed off the landowners. It's not just your area. Happens a lot around here, too. Seems that way too many folks think that when they buy an ATV that the right to trespass comes in the package deal. That fellow would have had to get the state police to come get his quad back had it happened on my property........I guarantee it.
Ethan Givan
Why would you walk half a mile in, just to set up by a road?? Maybe he didnt want to spook deer by driving in on a ATV, so instead slipped into the area on foot. Nothing unusual about that. I do it all the time. And I agree, we have the same issue with people around here wanting to drive all over the place on their atv's, including private land they dont have permission to be on. Missilelock
XTman- It was a good spot- natural funnell, Lots of oaks dropping, rubs....it just happens that there is a trail nearby that the owner uses to haul his firewood out on.....(during the spring/summer) Noone has permission to be riding there in hunting season. tp793
I'd certainly have gotten down and let him know what he was doing. Or called the Wildlife Officer.
Jeramie
Why would you walk half a mile in, just to set up by a road?? Because if there is that type of pressure by the road the deer are going to move in away from the road. Some of the best spots ever hunted were miles off of any beaten path. fly
With the owners permission some tire spikes thrown into the path might get the no trespassing point across. Make sure you collect all of them at the end of the season! A big sign posted in the middle of the path might also help.
MNcrittergittr
With the owners permission some tire spikes thrown into the path might get the no trespassing point across. Make sure you collect all of them at the end of the season! A big sign posted in the middle of the path might also help. There have been times when I would have loved to do that. It's illegal here in MN, but I think you're right it'd help getting the point accross. Every year it seems trespassing has gotten worse both on wheelers and idiots on foot. Listen to this: Just last weekend we got a trail pic of three punks trespassing on our property AND THEY KNEW IT! My brother recognized two of them, so he called them and my dad ran into one of them in town. They both explained that we had pics of them and to stay off our property (in so many words) and that the next itme we are going to the police. They gave some bs excuse and said ok. THE NEXT MORNING we go out and check the camera and it's stolen!!! loooong story short, we go on a war path and go over to this one IDIOT'S house talk to his parents (even though he's 18) and rip this idiot. His dad ends up bringing him to another idiots house where he retrieves our camera! So AFTER we talk to them and AFTER they know we have proof and pics of them trespassing and will get the police involved they still comeback....couple of criminal masterminds huh? The last couple years we have really battled these idiots, trespassers have stolen and damaged a lot of stuff. I can't even begin to explain how infuriating it is! I can tell ya this...I'm done messin' around! Edited October 21, 2009 by MNcrittergittr

People come on my land all the time. i'm normally okay with it but they know to keep off during hunting season unless they have permission from me (and few do.) I finally got tired of it and warned them one last time. usually they back off and stay out, but one guy wouldn't. i knew where he was gonna be driving his ATV the next day so i layed a bunch of barbed wire on the trail...he got the message. NC8point
I think everyone missed the guys point about him walking in a 1/2 a mile to hunt by a road. When I hunt by a road I sure don't walk 1/2 a mile to get there noemally about 100 yds.If you walk in a 1/2 a mile there shouldn't be any roads around

wtnhunt
Sounds like you needed to climb down and clear the air a bit with that guy. Yep, I most certainly would have caught up with him. Nothing against atv's here, they are quite useful, idiots on the other hand I have very little tolerance or patience for. Idiots are all over unfortunately and a shame we all at times have probably had to deal with them in one way or another.
sluggunner
I feel for you bud... Stupid new neighbors have ruined my hunting land with their ATV's They even tear up my land with them. They are out there every day zipping around even during hunting season. Have not seen a deer on my land since they moved in. I used to see deer all the time before they moved in. DocMort
We had an issue like that on our Family farm a few years back, guys bring atv's from the River side by crossing the river and then run all over our crops, well we found a few treestands they had put up, and made everyone of them look like they had bullet hole at about head height. Never had another problem with trespassers.
Swamphunter
Seems that way too many folks think that when they buy an ATV that the right to trespass comes in the package deal That goes for snowmobiles too. We have all kinds of trespassing complaints with guys riding snowmobiles around private houses orange safety fencing, into their lawns and around their crimson maple trees at 2am.... seems that its ok to ride in someones lawn just because there is snow on it. ruttinbuc
ATV's are forbidden on the property that I hunt. There used to be a problem until the landowners cracked down and pressed charges for trespassing and damage. Word got out of the big fines and it stopped in a hurry. I can understand the frustration with them as they ruined a few hunts for me. Just as jet skis messed up a few days of fishing. For whatever reason these people feel entitled to do as they please. NJ took measures to get some control on the irresponsible use of watercraft. Maybe they should do the same with ATV's.
m gardner
I love ATVs. They drive them everywhere possible even if it's illegal and there are no roads and herd the game into the few inaccessible areas where I hunt. If you've got a "set" it makes hunting easy. Packing out is hard though. Thursday I'll go to such a place to hunt elk. I know I'll see good bulls and no hunters. Hopefully I'll kill one and survive packing him out. When I first moved to Colorado the ATVers moved a big 4X5 mulie and a 5 point elk to me. Took a few minutes to shoot them. Two and a half days to pack them out. Rem308
And, unfortunately, almost everyone that falls into that category of folks has an ATV. At least in these parts. It really gives people w/ an ATV a bad reputation...I trailer my quad over w/ me when I'm hunting private property w/ ATV permission, though half the time it doesn't come off the trailer. I don't like to ride in and park it because of the scent contamination and noise. After bagging one and dragging it to the trail, I do like to go get it, unload some equipment/heavy layers back at the truck, and then haul my deer out w/ the quad. It sounds like the complaint is more against tresspassers than against ATVs. There's an awful lot of people who use ATVs responsibly, some on their own property, some on organized public trails, and some on private property where they have received permission. Those who misuse their machines are a different story. It would be nice if people would make that distinction. Doc
Prairiepredator
That would make me so mad. I can't stand people like that! If he does it again, try putting an arrow in his tire...lol! :clown:
Missilelock
Doc- I actually agree that there are some responsible ATV owners out there, but the vast magority of ATV owners have went out & bought themselves a real nice toy that they dont even have property to ride it on. They just figure that since theres an established trail there that they own it like a state highway.
