Quitting smoking............Help!!!

2 1/2 Years ago I was able to give up cigarettes after 17 years of smoking. Then I did something stupid. I had a swisher sweet. No problem right, wrong! I only had 1 every three days, then 1 a day, then 3 a day, and finally I was having one constantly. Heartburn, headaches, you know the story. Well I gave them up now, and holy cow! Am I hurting! I've been a complete wreck today. Can't type, can't concentrate, can't read. I'm committed this time though. Sick of stinking, throwing money away, being tired, hacking lung cookies. Any of you know what I'm talking about? Don't really need tips I guess, just want to vent. I'm going crazy!!!!!!!!!

Re: Quitting smoking............Help!!!

Don't give in! My dad and I made a deal in Nov. 2003 to where if I'd give up drinking pop then he'd stop smoking. Shortly after we made that deal, dad went to the doctor to get checked out and they found a cancerous tumor in the lower lobe of his left lung. March 2004 the doctors removed half of his left lung and now he has over a foot long scar on his back (left shoulder). He said that whenever he gets a craving for a cigarette all he has to do is pull his shirt up in the back and take a look at that scar. He's even gone as far as showing people that are willing to look at it in hopes that they would quit smoking as well.

Back on topic, I really commend you for trying to quit.. please don't give up! Stuff like this really hits home with me so I'm constantly encouraging people to kick the habit! You can do it!

Re: Quitting smoking............Help!!!

The first three days really hurt. Last night was really bad. Those cigars are strong I guess. Well, here in the next day or two is when I'll start smelling all of you smokers. Don't be offended when I scoul and move away, but lets face it smokers stink. You don't know it when you smoke but you sure know when you quit. At least I don't work in a traditional office setting where other people would have to put up with me. But I'm getting along better todat anyways.

Thanks all!

Re: Quitting smoking............Help!!!

My sister-in-law is on her 1,000,000th try to kick it. She tried a free hypnotism seminar administered in our area recently. She's been smoke free for 2 weeks so far. Funny thing is, she quit cold turkey for all 3 of her kids when she was pregnant, but always seemed to start up after they were born.

I keep offering to take her down to the head and neck cancer waiting room when I go for my check-ups to see what she has to look forward to, kind of a "scared straight" attempt, but she hasn't taken me up on the offer yet.

Re: Quitting smoking............Help!!!

Hang in there. Never been a smoker, but my parents do, and was exposed to it all my youth growing up.

Not to come off as harping, but you really need ot look at the health issues. I was pretty concerned about a mass my doctor found in my lung 2 summers ago. They were not sure if it was cancer or not. Having a thoracotomy is no fun believe me, nor is having the thoughts of what will happen to your family if you have cancer. Fortunately for me it was not a cancerous mass.

Sure wish my parents would quit smoking. Just dont see how people can willingly put in their own bodies and subject others to what they know is so dangerous.

I agree totally. But people who haven't been there just don't get how strong that grip is. It is a force. I'm 37 so I've been around a little while and I used to really think drunks and druggies were just scum. I've mellowed a bit though. I'm not ready to say it's an illness, but being a smoker I definately understand being addicted. It sound so simple yet the power over you is unbelievable.

11 months ago I quit smoking! I smoked for 20 years! Half of my life! I feel great! I tried four other times! But this time it was because of my little girl! She hung a sign up for the said, "daddy quit smoking". What could I do! She saved my life, I tell her that too!

You can do it! cool.gif

Respect what you have said about people in Addiction...they are not bad people they are however overwhelmed and overpowered beyond belief with their drug of choice.

Re: Quitting smoking............Help!!!

Well I made it through another day. Today was pretty bad but a lot better than yesterday.

What should I buy with the money I save. I should say, what kind of gun. I spent about $7.00 a day on the average so thats quite a savings. I want a stainless berretta in 40 sw, but would also like a new .270. What do you think?

Thanks again to all!!
