anyone own a springfield xd?

Recommended Posts

Hey, I'm sure this has gone threw here, I'm looking at getting another hand gun after just buyig my .44mag, I want to know if anyone has or has shot the xd line. I'm REALLY torn between getting a carry weapon or getting a shooter, so the xd subcompact in .40 or the xdm (m=match grade barrel). I have never viewed the 9mm round as an effective self defense round it just seam light weigh so thats why I was going with the 40. SO before I drag this on forever, I was just looking for any personal reviews or both the gun and the 9mm vs .40cal

I own the XD in 40cal. Nice gun, overall fit and finish is very nice, even after 3 years of use. I believe the XDM would be even nicer with the interchangable back straps. I have yet to have any failures in the gun, either from ammo or the gun. I do keep it extremely clean, but it gets alot of use. Good luck in your decision.

9mm is a solid self defense round. With HP ammo the difference is not enough to worry over. The XD is S&W's response to glock so check them out. If you are going to carry take a combat pistol class in addition to CCW class. I like glock and you can get a conversion barrell to switch a 40 to a 9 if you want. The barrel is about 100 bucks. The XD is not a bad gun,

I have an .40 XD and I like it. I dont shoot it a whole lot just due to lack of time and access to a good place, but I have a few hundred rounds through it and the only problem I have had is with a certain brand of ammo. I cant recall what brand, but they wouldnt cycle.

Other than that I have had no issues, really is a good gun.

It's a good pistol. The XDm is better. It's pretty much a different pistol. Rob Leatham on youtube has some videos on it. The only problem I have with them is the slide release lever hits my thumb under recoil and locks the slide back. Not a good thing. I have big hands and my son-in-law with smaller hands loves it and has taken it home. The 40 is best if you can shoot it. The 9 (mine is in a SIG 239) is a good self defense round if you practice and shoot them in the head or high in the thorax. Who knows they may be wearing a vest and the head may be the only option.

My dad recently bought a Glock 22c in 40 cal but licked the XDM in 40 cal so much that he went back and bought it also. He loves it and so far has had no failures or malfunctions. As far as a 9mm not being sufficent for self defence, Bull. There have been more men die from a 9mm or a 38spl than probably any other handgun around. I personaly prefer Glock in 45acp, but carry a 9x18 Marakov as a CCW. Either one will get the job done as long as the offender isnt wearing a vest, in which case only a head shot would be acceptable.

I've seen a video of some idiot and his buddies trying out a bulletproof vest at about 5 yards with a 9mm Luger and 115 grain fmj ammo. It went through the vest and into a lung( he was coughing up blood). He didn't know he had been hurt and was fully functional long enough to kill you.

I have an XD in 45 ACP I love it. The only thing I would do different is that I would buy the model with the thumb safety. It makes me a little nervous to not have a selectable safety on the gun.

As far as difference between 9mm or 40 S & W. Either one will get the job done. Your skill is more important than what the gun is chamber for.

A good hit with a 22 lr is more effective than a miss with a 44 Mag.

WELL, I just did some math and if the few things I have for sale sell I should have about 340 buck towards my xd...ya freaking whoo....then I just got to come up with the 165 for the CCW class...lol...and if I take a combat pistol class if I can find one and if I can afford it.

I think the obvious response to this is. Uh, it did go through a "bullet proof" vest before it went into his lung. I don't think your average thug on the street is going to be wearing a vest. Your average meth heads vest will be in a pawn shop somewhere.

I have an XDM in 9mm. I have several handguns, both revolvers and pistols I love this pistol. It has became my personal carry gun. I am truly a .45ACP fan, but the capacity of the XDM opened an eye I didn't realize I had....a fully loaded pistol and 2 clips and you are a "walking arsenal". Loaded with good ammo, it will get the job done on any zombie on 2 feet.

I have an XD 40 that I picked up earlier this year. I have put close to a thousand rounds through it since I got it and have not had any issues with it. My only complaint is that my hands are a little small and the mag eject button is a little hard to reach so I have to move my hand around to get to it. Even with that I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Some ammo will shoot through a vest. Most expanding bullets or those with a large frontal area (the good fight stoppers) will grab enough of the fabric in the vest to stop them. That's why the FN pistols for the little bottleneck 22 cartridge they make are becoming so popular. They were meant to shoot through vests and stop the person wearing it. As for the average thug on the street. They usually go away when they find out you are armed. Saturday we had one of them approach us then abruptly change direction when I unzipped my motorcycle jacket while I was pumping gas. We looked like harmless old people until I squared off with him. What I worry about is Phoenix has basically become a sanctuary city where the Mexican cartel members can freely come and go. We're moving this spring before all **** breaks loose.

Very safe in Arkansas (except little rock and pine bluff) and there's plenty room for you.

I have and carry both the XD 9 sub-compact as well as the XD 45 compact. I will give each gun a high recomendation. I perfer the 45 compact as it is roughly the same size as the Glock 19, and 23 platform that is widely excepted as a great self defense platform. You cant beat the capactity of the sub 9 at 13 + 1 in the pipe. The 40 SC only offers 9+ 1 and some see that as a great disadvantage. Take that into your own personal consideration about capacity. I think you will be happy with any XD platform as long as you define your use and carry requirements. The 9mm round has improved a great deal in the last few years in my opinion. Having said that I am still a huge fan of the .45 ACP. Find the right firearm for your needs and carry it every day and you cant go wrong.

Well, after thinking about it and talking to a few state troopers and what I have heard is this. Most civilian defense situations end in less that 7 shots fired (have a few friends who are state troopers, step mom is a civ in the state). So I went to gander mt. today and ordered my springfield xd subcompact in .40....I just like the extra knock of the .40 and it was a hard decision because the store had a 9mm sitting there...but I stuck with the .40 I'll post some pics as soon as I get it....

OH what should I name her?

I think you made a good choice and a well thought out one. I have shot several XDs in 9mm, .40 and .45 and they all performed nicely.

My CCW, an ex PO, instructor told us that we probably should keep no more that 6 rounds in our carry weapon no matter how many it can hold. He said if it ever comes down to you being tried for shooting someone, more than 6 shots tends to show the jury that you were intent on killing someone. (not sure that sounds like what I wanted to say)

And that if you don't get it done with 6 shots, you probably won't get the chance for any more. I personally carry my .40 with 5+1. Besides, it's lighter too! Now that's just my opinion and I'm sure others differ with it, but that's OK.

BTW, mine is Mel (for Melanie).
