carolinakidd
I LOVE my .308!!!! I hit a stage in my life where I wanted something "fancy" and I got a .300 win..7Mag...270 wsm and I have sold ALL of them...Why mess with perfection! I shoot a 165gr federal bullets, and I've NEVER had a deer/hog take a step, and I've killed many. I bought my son a 7mm08,and I would put it at #2 on my list.I have been very impressed with it. I think those two calibers have the perfect weight/speed for whitetails in N.America...My #3 would be a 25-06.VERY accurate, and a under-rated caliber in my opinion. Whitetail Freak Hunter
Last year I used a Savage 99 in .308 Win, but it was not mine (wish it was) But I picked up a Handi Rifle in 7mm-08 that is gonna put the thump on my whitetail buck this year. davetucker
i used my 270 for open fields and 45-70 for in the bush!!Last yr after my bear hunt my 270 wouldn't quit group right so it just came back from the gunsmith and still not good!!No time for a new scope since season opens in the a.m. so i guess the new lucky charm will be the browning a-bolt 25-06 for open field and the 45-70 chainsaw for the bush!!Love my pro-hunter 45-70!!! Sykotik
I have shot deer with anything from the .243 to the .444 Marlin but most of the time I carry either my Remington 760 Carbine in 30-06 or one of my 30/30's. I'm predominately a still hunter so I like a short, light, quick handling rifle.

Rhino
The vast majority of my firearm hunting is in fairly thick cover so I carry a light weight short action rifle in .308. On the rare occasions when I'm looking at the possibility of long range shots I use my 30-378 Wby Mag.
just-an-illusion
Well at the moment I have a A-bolt and 2 742s in 30-06, a Traditions 50 cal, a Rem 700 243, and a ruger super balckhawk hunter in 44 mag. and I have had a 270 and a 300WM in the past.I have a few spots to hunt that are really thick and here at the house if i shoot one i dont want it going off of the bluff (75 ft vertical with 2 spots for me to go up and down). I am thinking about a larger caliber for pure knock down power. Right now I am leaning towards putting a slug barrel on my 870 12 ga or buying a Marlin 45/70. What do you guys think? If it were me, I would go with the 45/70 over the slug barrel. Or even a 450 Marlin. Both of those should have ample power to put down any deer in their tracks givin the right shot. If shots were resonably close and you were confident in your shooting skills, you could just go for neck shots and use the rifles you have now.
