Recommended Posts

I am sure alot of people ask all the prostaff members "how they get where they are". (how did they get on the prostaff). i want to be a prostaff member! i would love to have the chance the be a realtree prostaff member, and i know for sure i have the knowlege an skills to be able to be able to make it! it was just a question that i have never been able to get answered. would you tape a hunt an send it in? or what? what would i need to do? because i would do anything to do what these guys are doing! thank you for your time an hope to hear from somebody.

Is there something that sets you apart from the other people who are wanting to be a pro staffer? Michael Waddell started as a champion turkey caller, Duck Commander as a champion duck caller. Some are guides and some were just lucky. You have to think what could you do for the company of Realtree that someone else can't do. Any company would want to know what would make them choose you over someone else. Do you have footage, are you a seminar speaker? If you watch Realtree sponsored shows ,some of them have contests where you can submit video and be chosen for a spot on a show. Check Whitetail Country, Realtree Outdoors and many others.Do some research on their shows and learn more about what they do. I do not know if they are adding any one to their staff as of now but keep trying by learning more about what Realtree is about. They receive thousands of requests a day. Good Luck!

I think Michael was also a freelance cameraman as well. Another thing outdoor companies are always looking for is writers, whether that me columns, features or PR work. Another thing, if you're in school right now then finish your degree. I believe Bill Jordan holds a degree in Business. Hope this throws some more ideas your way.

I'd say google for media schools in your area or most colleges have a program for exactly that. I know we have a television station on PBS that is from Southern Illinois University - Carbondale. They do everything from in field camera work to in studio work. I can't think of any better way. One other tip is to not aim too high too fast. Being a RT Prostaff member is like being a driver on the Sprint Cup Circuit. You have to go through the lower circuits first then prove yourself on shortracks and work your way up through whatever way you can prove you can drive. You don't start out with the big boys not knowing how to start the car. You also have to offer something unique like a ballistics expert, Archery Expert, Guide expert, camera experience and huge amounts of experience in a broad and specific field. That sounds like an oxymoron but it's true. You have be a jack of all trades and have a few specific fields of expertise. You have to be available to travel (sometimes at your own expense) and you have to have a spotless record both publicly and criminally. You can't be a jerk... ever!!! You have to be the poster child of whatever sponsor gives you a shot. Then you have to represent them 100% of the time and have an expert knowledge in their product. You also have to have a marketable personality with patience out the whazoo! You will have to make appearances for hours on end with people testing you at every turn trying to catch you off guard. You also have to be able to defend your sponsor's product which would require debate experience to a degree. By the way, that's just for a minor sponsor. But you can't ever consider any sponsor as a minor sponsor. I don't care if it's for string wax, one leads to another and they all go on your resume and you can bet that the big sponsors are on a first name basis with almost everyone in the industry. Remember, almost everyone was a minor sponsor at one time and they all worked very hard to not only sell and produce their products but to make it possible to pay for prostaff members. You won't get riches or fame but you may just get the chance to be on a lower budget hunting film even if it's behind the camera or just helping in editing or production which doesn't get you a whole lot of exposure. I'm no expert but I can easily see that the unmatched hard work that goes into Realtree Productions is nothing compared to what it took to become Realtree Productions and make guys like you froth at the mouth wanting to be a part of it. Good luck and I hope I knocked your ideas down a little bit. Ideas are not what accomplishes a goal. It's all the hard work you put behind it that makes it look so tantalizing. I'm not trying to destroy your dreams but dreams often cloud the hard work it takes to attain them. Something I wish our president knew.
