What version of word do you have?

To open Microsoft Office Word 2007 .docx or .docm files with Microsoft Office Word 2003, Word 2002, or Word 2000, you need to install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for 2007 Office Word, Excel and PowerPoint File Formats and any necessary Office updates. By using the Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system, you can open, edit some items, and save Office Word 2007 documents in previous versions of Word.

im having the same problem! We had to transcribe 50 words of our favorite song using the International Phonetic Alphabet and then exchange it with another person in class. The person i exchanged with emailed hers to me and its in the docx file. I cant open it either and i feel bad because she revised mine like 10 mins after i sent mine to her, and i have yet to get to hers.

I actually had this same problem the other night. I was working on a report at school and it was on microsoft office 2007, so I emailed the report to myself to work on at home, but I have microsoft 2003. When I went to open it, it said I had to download some file converter that will make 2007 files work on a 2003 program. I downloaded it and it worked fine...but today I worked on the report some more at school and put some charts on it. When I emailed it to myself and tried opening it, the document was all weird because of the way it had to be converted. The way the chart making thing works on 2007 is different from 2003 so it would not work on my computer. Hope that can help you out some.

My PC crashed some time ago and like an idiot I didn't have it backed up. I lost all the Office programs. :( So right now the only thing I have installed is Microsoft Word, which is an old version that we had laying around. Word 97.

Tried the install, didn't work. I'm going to try the recover text that Tominator suggested now.
