The_Kat
Ok guys I'm having a horrible time with scent control and the wind this season. I use HS Specialties products for scent control. Wash my camo in it, dry it, I bag it in a scent tight bag, dress in the field, spray down, rubber boots....the whole nine yards. I also use a cover of non estrous doe urine once I get setup in the tree. Still I've been busted three times right before the deer hit my shooting lanes. The wind has been unpredictable and is constantly blowing! So I'm looking for advice. I'm also considering scent lok and scent blocker clothing too. I know it's pricy, but I'm tired of looking up wind forecasts, spending hours in the stand only to have the wind shift and cost me a shot. HOYTnMUZZYboy
I have had similar things happen to me this season as well. I use Scent blocker from head to toe, use dead down wind scent free products. The wind seems to always swirl on me no matter where im hunting. I think all the products help to an extent but sometimes them whitetails get just enough of a wiff of us and thats all it takes. I hope you have better luck man. It happens to us all. Maybe try movin your stand one direction or the other?
cray8705
I have both Scent-Blocker and Scent-Lok. The blocker I have is more heavy weight clothing and the Lok is lighter weight. I prefer the Scent-Lok over the Scent Blocker though. I think it is more quiet and more comfortable. I also wear a base layer that is suppose to help with scent control. I wash all of my stuff in Scent-Blocker laundry detergent and then according the directions on the clothes you through them in the dryer which activates the carbon (I recommend a drier bag otherwise you got little black particles all over). I do wear the Scent-Blocker knee high boots which are awesome in my opinion. I use the Primos earth scent eliminator which I think is great stuff. I haven't had any deer bust me at all this year and to top it off I never even worry about the wind at all. It is expensive, but what isn't expensive as far as bow-hunting goes? I would seriously recommend getting some scent-lok or blocker clothes, in my opinion its the difference in getting a deer or not.
Ohiobucks
It's all that Axe body spray and "hair product" you are using before heading out the door, the deer are gonna bust you every time boy.... :hammer1: :clown:

MCH
All you can do is try your best to be as scent free as possible. But honestly, you never will. I had the same experience earlier this year. I broke down and washed my summit seat, my wrist strap, my wrist sling, and even started putting a trash bag over my stand when I put it in the back of my truck. I've started spraying my hands down with scent spray before grabbing my hunting clothes out of the washer. I've always washed my towels for drying off, but now I wash my wash cloth too. There's so much that you have to watch...its not even funny.
Turkeygirl
Same here...washed my camo in baking soda...had it hanging outside several days before season....I've been busted more times (3) this season...last year maybe once the whole season! I think it's the wind...seems to switch unexpectedly. Either way washed my camo again today...and my backback and drag rope because it smelled horrible! I also have a bottle of the scent spray stuff...like the H.S....and a Scentblocker I got on sale last year...go figure...
AceArcher
My advice. Get higher in the tree to let you scent blow over. Use the Wal-mart brand scent spray to kill your b/o. By a pack of malboro lights and smoke in the stand. You rarely get busted with this combo...at least if works for me. I don't own any expensive scent lock clothing. I also let my clothes outside b/f I hunt. I am convinced that the smoke smell is not related to humans for most deer and actually kills human odor. I have deer (big bucks included) coming in down wind of me all the time and it doesn't fail me.

One of my friends who I go out hunting with smokes like a chimney and in the truck while we are hunting. :smoke: It always surpised because the deer really never busted us as much as we thought, when I thought we would never have even a chance at them because of the smoke smell. As far as scent control goes, you can never get rid of your scent completely. What works best is if you play the wind properly.
BowJoe
Uhhhh.... stop farting every time you get excited by a deer. You asked.
pointing_dogs_rule
No scent protection is 100%, especially with the wind into the direction of the deer. Always try and hunt those stands that are favorable to a good wind. I use Scent-lok, Dead down wind spray and follow all the other things that you do. good luck to all the dog
ruttinbuc
Leather belts, leather wallets as well as the wrist slings, straps and your bow string all hold human scent. I like using raccoon urine on my boots when in the tree. Spray some around the base of the tree and at hip level on the tree, as well. Get yourself at least a scent blocker or lok headcover. I have killed just as many deer before the carbon hype. I still get busted now and then. Keep boots in a tote. Their nose is phenomenal.. sskybnd
thats what i was thinking, get higher, i seen a segment about how the scent travels, it showed a person setting a smoke canister on a stand, when he let it go it showed that the smoke came 12ft down to the ground, so if your in a 16 ft stand the scent would come down to the 4 ft height, and if you dress to stay warm before getting into the stand you might be perspirating enough to cause a scent. i would say try to get higher in the tree and wait to put on any extra clothing till you get in the stand. PaBowhunter00
I like the Primos Silver XP Earth Blend Scent killer, same with the laundry detergent, used this stuff before I had my scent lok suit and it worked great, it's worked just as good with my suit. buckbuster11
Shower before every hunt, I think that's one of the best things you can do. Shower and get right out the door, don't hang around in the house. My clothes stay outside at all times during the hunting season. I stopped bagging them up and putting them in "scentfree" containers a couple years ago and it makes a huge difference I think. I leave my stuff airing out on my covered porch 24/7. Actually all my gear stays out there. Other then that I spray down with scentkiller before each hunt and that's about it. You wouldn't believe what I got away with tonight. I had 4 doe dead downwind at less then 10 yards. The biggest was so close I could hear her breathing in the air when she was scent checking. 30 minutes later I had a real nice buck come straight at me dead downwind and hung around for a few minutes making scrapes and never got me. I still play the wind when I can, but my system seems to be working really well.
hungry hunter
Dang Kyle, Myself, I shower in green soap, wash clothes in Scent Killer soap, Earth scent dryer sheets, and keep my hunting clothes in a plastic tote in the truck, get dressed after ariving, I use Silver XP, Scent shield (acorn) spray, and Deer Dander on the shoes. SO far this year I ain't been busted even by a BEAR 30 yards down wind. The three deer all within 20 yards (no ethical shots) walked by the closest was 3 yards. Hope ya find the answer. I thought the does really came to the Axe smell? I know what you mean Kyle, I've missed a chance at a few does this year because I got busted right about the time I was getting ready to stick one. Most of those days the wind was just swirling back and forth. I just keep hunting, I aint going to get religous about it and go out and spend a fortune on stuff, I dont think a person can be scent free, but no doubt you can improve your odds. wtnhunt
Don't know what more you could do kyle, but really don't think scent lok or scent block is going to solve a bad or swirling wind. I have had deer get as close without carbon clothes as I have them get with it and also had them come in downwind without any type carbon clothes too many times to dream of counting. Might try adjusting your stand setup for the wind.
hutchies
GQ, my number one tip.........................Use the wind to your advantage. I know where your at since I did put you in there and all........LOL. What i do is walk in and use my wind checker. Don't be afraid to move trees. If the wind is bad for the tree I'm planning I move to a tree that is good. Other than that cut a shooting lane that is a little longer shot and shoot before they get to that 20 yard shooting lane.
