Tony
as some of you know i have been after a 160 class buck. i have a few pics of him and im pretty sure i knew his pattern. i was just waiting for him to show up on a day when i was there. so this morning i do a little rattling in a 15 to 25 mph wind. in comes the same 130 class 8 point i passed last weekend. hes asking for it, but i let him go. so a hour later i start another rattling session. i no sooner get the horns together and all i see are big horns and tail running away from me about 80 yards away. so did i blow it? my options are... hunt the same stand and hope he will be back and that i didnt spook him too bad? hang a new stand 100 yards north of me and use him seeing me at the old stand to my advantage? sit at home on the couch and watch football, Realtree Dvds, eat and dream of big bucks? of course you know if i hang a new stand, that he will go past the one im not in... what do you guys think? arrow32
Hard call really. I'd almost hunt it again but then again I almost wouldn't hunt it again.lol No help.
arrow32
Ok I've thought. I'd move up 100 yards like you said. Might not work but thats what I'd do. Thats me thinking with my gut. Got busted last year by a great buck and ended up not getting another chance at him because I didn't move. He always skirted the area I was in. The_Kat
I moved stands after being busted....I haven't seen a deer since the move lol.
Tony
you guys arent much help.. you know if i put up a new stand, the buck will walk past the one im not in..:poke::hammer2: Tony
arrow32
Yes of course that will happen. Then if you don't move he won't walk by so either way its a lose lose:D:D:P Go with your gut. I'd move thats just me.
rhine16
Give it a couple days and get back in that stand. I wouldn't go in there and hang a stand.... If i moved I'd be using a climber.
Ethan Givan
Do you think he saw you in the stand for sure? If not I think I would give it a few days and hunt the same stand again. Sounds like the wind was blowing pretty hard, so he might already have been kinda jittery...and then the sudden noise of you rattling might have sent him running. Tominator
I'd give it a rest. You still have time for the rut action. I'd probably hunt a different area.
wtnhunt
If I had another stand available, I would leave that one where you got busted and take a climber in and hunt it the day you take it in. Give the new location with the climber a few sits, then back to the other stand.
Tominator
William's response reminded me of an article I just read in American Hunter. Same thing happened to a guy in the article, so he vacated. His buddy took a climber in, hung it 100 yards away from where the deer was spooked and killed the deer 2 or 3 days later. I've also read a few articles lately that said a deer has to be really pressured to leave its home turf.
MichiganHunter
you guys arent much help.. you know if i put up a new stand, the buck will walk past the one im not in..:poke::hammer2: Tony LOL....well let me try...you didn't spook him he just was startled by your display of dominance....SO go back and drive around in your truck for a wile with a buck call jammed in the tail pipe so it makes a really loud agressive buck call....than jump out and pee all over the place...that will make the buck think there is an old mature doe in the area that is in Heat....then if you got it in you once you climb up your tree start screaming HERE BUCK BUCK BUCK BUCK, HERE BUCK BUCK BUCK...(but dont go telling people, that's a trade secret)....and if the HERE BUCK BUCK BUCK dont work strip down to your undies light a LARGE fire, coat your self in doe pee and dance around with an arrow in one hand and a deer call in the other....chanting Ted Nugents "Fred Bear" wile spinning as fast as you can.....and if that dont work....you can sacrafise a small goat to the bow hunting gods and paint your face with the blood....lol...Trust me, One of them will work. I'm planing on putting out an instructional DVD next year. (I WIN FOR BEST HELPER) Edited October 30, 2009 by MichiganHunter
MNcrittergittr
If it was windy, and unless you are 100% sure he pegged you, I would give it another shot. However, moving isn't a bad idea either. Murphey's law states that no matter what you do, it's kind of a crap shoot lol. If you know he's in the area, I'd stick around. If you do move, I wouldn't move far. This may or may not help in your decision but for probably about the last 5 seasons, I've blown it on at least 1 monster buck a year, and I never saw the same deer from the same spot again in the season. BUT, I have blown it on big bucks that never really outright busted me, and I have had second encounters with them. I definintely don't think you blew your season! Especially with the rut action that is right around the corner!
doubledrop
if you were truly busted, move. move maybe a couple hundred yards away and with rut coming in you dont know what will happen. very hard decision though.
patriotoutlaw
Chances are if he saw you for sure, that stand is toast. I'd move.
stevebeilgard
did you spook him, or the sound of the antlers? did the deer actually see you? i think it's an unknown. the rut starts in 10 days. hunt elsewhere until then, then use your stand. Muleyman
Don't sweat it. Those kinda things happen. I would stick with that stand for a few more day and see what happens and if you have a trail cam up there really watch for him. Arter afew days if you don't see him much then maby u could try moving. Don't give up. Good luck.
Tony
heres what im going to do. im going to hunt a backup stand in the morning. im going to go at 10 am and scout a location for a new stand north of my primary. i have to work sat 3 pm to 11 pm but i have sunday off. sunday morning im going to hunt the backup stand again. then at 11am im going to set the other stand up. this will give me a 3rd option for rut hunting. i have played this over and over, and im not sure if the buck spooked because of the horns or the wind. the high winds might have made him edgy and the sound of the horns all of a sudden might have just spooked him. thanks for the help and suggestions guys. ruttinbuc
As long as he doesn't leave for the ladies on the other side of the county, Tony. Those big bucks are spooky in the wind. Doesn't take much to send them running. The rut will make him vulnerable at some point. I would mix it up on him a bit too. Good luck! Missilelock
Take a climber in- maybe hunt your old stand a time or 2 also----- Big bucks have a large range- you have to think bigger. that 100 yard stretch is not the only place he is vulnerable. start burning some bootleather. dbHunterNY
If you can put a stand watching a trail down wind from your stand and leave the old stand there. He will probably remember you were there. However, around here the bucks tend to not run to the next country side when that happens but just avoid the immediate area. He may show up still but take a route downwind of your old stand. I think that's a good idea, but who knows what the thing is going to do. That's why we persue big bucks. Good luck Tony
