thanks for all the help, you will all get credit when the big boy goes down. heres a little more info.

this buck is only a 3.5 year old 4.5 at the most. while he is quite large, he is one of the dominant bucks in the area. there is another i havent seen yet that is larger. my buddy doug who owns the land has seen him a couple of times.

when i showed him this picture to doug, he said nope thats not the big one! i said are you sure and he said yep the big one has a lot more mass and taller tines. i scouted some today and i have found a spot im going to hang a stand. the tree is in the right spot and its downwind.

my main concern with hanging in this new spot is i had a stand close to here about 6 years ago and i spooked a bunch of deer everytime i went in the morning. the main reason i hunt my #1 stand is because i can get in and out without a lot of disturbance to the small place i hunt. its just 35 acres but borders a huge amount of timber.

last but not least, im not positive it was this buck that i spooked.

so the plan is in the works, im hunting my backup stand tomorrow morning. i will then at 11 am hang this new stand and then start hunting it sunday afternoon.

I'd have 2 or 3 stand options to hunt anyway Tony. As you know the chase phase of the rut is about to start for you up there. When that happens the big ones are going wherever the does go without any thought of having been spooked from a hunter in a treestand. If he's on her and she comes through in range, he will stay right with her. That's all that will be on his mind.

If it's legal to use decoys where you hunt I'd use one in this situation.

Have the decoy in range looking away from you and away from the location the deer is likely to approach. The decoy makes the deer think you're not in the stand. He'll first try to see what she's looking at and then he'll try to get in her(the decoy's) line of sight to get her attention. Spray the deke down real good with a scent killer after you set it. Then pin a scent wick with estrous on it to the rear end of the deke as well.

Not guaranteed to work but it has worked for me.

In my experience, even if you've spooked him, if he likes the area enough he'll return if he's convinced you are not there. Especially if he sees other "deer" using the area. ;)

..;). i totally agree with this theory and by maybe by combining a buck/doe decoy in with your setup may increase your chance's!

What you need is help from a buddy like say from NY? I mean if you know any guys that you have personally met while hunting antelope maybe at Steve B's, you could probably pester him enough to come and assist you in the killing of that big boy!! LOL

You will nail him Tony.... besides if you don't get him this year, thing how big he will be next year!

i huntedmy primary stand today and was really encouraged by what i saw.

i saw the buck i spooked while trying to rattle last week and i had him at 23 yards. hes a 140 class 8 point kind of wide, but real white horns. from what i remember the buck i spooked had the same colored horns. also this buck walked right down the edge of the cedars and stopped right where he spooked last week.

when he turned to walk away from me the buck went exactly on the same path he did last week. i then realised this was the same buck that spooked. he worked a scrape down there and went about his buisness. there is no way i could confuse these 2 bucks they arent even close to the same. obviously he didnt spook bad enough to come back.

i have known about the scrape line down there, but felt i was sitting at the start of it, in a prime location stand where the wind is to my favor 90% of the time. any buck working it walks past me to get to it.

i also saw 4 other bucks today and 7 does. the deer were really moving and i had action all day. but nothing big, i have one last pic of the biggest buck on oct 19th, but havent actually seen him.

i did not set a new stand after what i saw today. my fears of spooking too many deer walking another 100 yards into this area is just too strong. in years past , i made this mistake and i feel it coust me. for this year im staying put with just the 2 stands i have now.

heres a pic of the last time the big boy went by

Looks like you made up your mind. I was wondering if you saw a white tail as he ran off, but doesn't look like it matters now.

Hey, in your post on page2 with the pictures, I think those are different bucks. The top buck's g2 and g3 are about the same length, the bottom buck's g3 looks shorter than his g2. Looks like several nice deer running around the area! Sounds like things are heating up for you too! Good luck, looking forward to seeing more pics!
