Yes...I'm hunting for multiple scopes. I have a savage 30-06 with black composite stock. Came with a tasco scope that I don't like. I want to be able to make some long shots with this gun and utilize it's potential. What power scope brings decent versitily for this gun? Should I buy two of the Leupold's? (see post in blue elk ML)

Re: Scope for 30-06??

As you can see you will get as many opinions as there are scopes. There are many different makes and models on the market that will serve you well. You can buy a decent functional scope for anywhere from $100 to over $1000. Some shooters like Leupold scopes. I personally do not care for them. I feel they are way too overpriced for their quality. I have had bad scopes from many manufacturers, including Leupold.

What do you want in a scope? For me mechanical ruggedness is number 1. I can put up with darker optics, slightly fuzzier picture, or not totally clear from edge to edge as long as I know that the bullet will go to the same point of impact every time. I have found that most scopes that are the upper end of the manufacturers line are decent performing products. I would definately take a top of the line Simmons or Weaver over a Leupold Rifleman. I won't get a bottom of the line scope from anyone but the best manufacturers like Swarovski, Zeiss, Leica, Schmidt and Bender, etc.

I have many good quality scopes from Burris, Leupold, Simmons, old Redfield, and Cabelas Alaskan Guide. One scope that I am impressed with is the Cabelas Alaskan Guide. Its moderately priced, mechanically it has been flawless, has repeatable adjustments, good eye relief, and had decent optics. I have this scope on a 300 Weatherby Magnum that is my first pick for long range big game shooting. This is my primary elk gun. I have a .338 Win Mag with a Burris Black Diamond as a backup gun.

As to what magnification level you should get, that depends on the shooter. Some prefer low to mid range magnification, some prefer high magnification. Low magnification gives a larger field of view and allows easier target acquisition. Higher magnification allwows closer examination of the target, and more precise aiming. Lower magnification gives a brighter view as the exit pupil is typically larger than the higher magnification scopes. Lower magnification also typically has more eye relief than higher magnification scopes.

Another thing is the objective size. The larger the objective, the more light it lets in, to a point. It also gives a larger field of view. But the drawback to a larger objective is the physical size. It requires a high to extra high ring to clear the barrel. When the scope is placed higher, it can make the shooter hold their head too high from the stock. I prefer more cheek contact (cheek weld) with the stock. This promotes consistant shooting and better accuracy. My favorite objective size is 44mm. Its a great combination of field of view, light transfer, weight, and physical size. I have a couple scopes with 50mm lenses and I don't care for them that much.

Re: Scope for 30-06??

Guess it would all depend on what you want to spend. Have had a simmons 44 mag 3-10 on my .270 for about 10 years and have been pretty happy with it. Think I may eventually change over to a leupold on the .270 though and put the 44 mag on my wifes .243 to replace the cheap simmons scope that came with her gun.

Re: Scope for 30-06??

I have a Burris FF 2, and its the best scope for the money ive ever had my hands on. Its a 4-14X42 A/O and came with a free spotting scope (12-24X50 Burris Landmark) for 340 shipped to my door from riflescopes.com. It also has the very useful ballistic plex. I bought a Pentax Whitetails Unlimited 3-11X42 before my Burris, and all i can say is big disapointment, i sent it back. They are both assembled at the same place, but Burris has much better glass in my opinion. Next we will talk about Leupold, first off i think Leupold is WAY over priced, and people buy it for the name. The warrenty is good, but the glass isn't that great looking to me.

Burris has a LifeTime Warrenty too, and better glass. So i would go with the Burris Fullfield 2. The 4-14X42 A/O w/ free spotting scope is $340 and the 3-9X40 w/ free spotting scope is $200. Both have the ballistic plex. Burris is the best scope for the money, there are better, but u will pay the big money for them. Get a Burris, you won't be disapointed.

Re: Scope for 30-06??

I just ordered a refurbished Nikon Monarch 4-12x40 for $200 for my .17 HMR. Its a good price for a top quality scope. We will have to see if the scope is in decent mechanical shape when it arrives. I plan on putting it through some rigorous tests.
