BearClaw
What brand or kind of knife does everyone use that bone out their own deer?
wtnhunt
Use a couple, most used when boning out though is a buck fillet knife. Have two of them in different lengths.
BearClaw
I've never done it before but I'd like to try on my next deer. Do you recommend straight or curved and what length? Stiff or semi-stiff?
Muleyman
Is this the knife you have wtnhunt?? because this is what we use for cubing the meat but we just got it. I think it is what we are gonna use for boning the deer out now. http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=BU221

The ones I have came from cabelas, but I don't see them listed there. Have two of them one a 7 1/2 inch blade and one with a 9 inch blade. Those are somewhat flexible stainless steel knives. Ravin R10 man
I use a lock back for gutting skinning/boning I like the bladejust long enough so I can lay my indea finger on top and its at the end of the blade. Anything longer is waste of a blade. Edited November 1, 2009 by Mathews XT Man
RangerClay
Have you ever walked into a butcher shop and seen a butcher using a hunting knife? Of course not. Go shopping and get boning knives made for butchering meat. I recommend Forschner knives, made in Switzerland by Victorinox. They stay super sharp and the quality is excellent! http://www.forschnerknives.net/eshop/10Expand.asp?ProductCode=FORFBONER I have all of these but I prefer the 5"

RangerClay
What size? Curved or straight? Stiff or semi? It's all about feel and what you prefer. Mine is the knife in the lower right hand corner of the link. My dad prefers the knife in the upper right hand corner with the slighty curved blade. Its like the action on a fishing pole, everyone has a personal preference. I have two of the boning knives pictured below and one chef's knife for slicing big chunks of meat into steaks. You can buy these at any local restaurant supply store. I use this to keep them sharp.
bfletch7441
Since I grind practically the whole thing, I just use my gutting knife. http://www.buckknives.com/index.cfm?event=product.detail&productID=2929 Ben
johnf
I use this one from the time the deer is laying on the ground till it's in the cooler. I use a filet knife to get the silver skin off and to cut steaks. http://www.thebladeshop.com/Buck_Zipper_691BK_p/691bkg.htm
