Last Chance Success in IL

For those of you that live in the midwest you know how lousy the weather has been lately. We didn't see hardly any sunshine during our 7 days in IL. My best hunt was the 1st day seeing 9 different bucks including an all out fight inside 45 yards. Very cool! It was downhill after that weather wise until the bitter end.

The last day of our hunt (Oct. 30th) a front finally blew through following about 24 hours of rain. That afternoon the temperature started dropping so I felt like the deer should move. My buddy wasn't even going to hunt until he saw me getting ready to hit the woods at 1:30 after his short nap. OK...one more shot.

Around 3:15 I get a text from my buddy "2 does just ran under me and kept looking behind like being chased but nothing". My response "Stay Ready". A minute later I get another text "Does busted me, snorted, gone, time will tell". A few minutes later I get this text (exactly like I received it :D) "I just shot a stud with drop tine! Hit high, not goosd penatration!!! Boutto shakeourtiof trwee!!!!!!" LMBO :D As it turned out his hit was fine with the buck only 12 steps from his tree. The buck piled up about 80 yards away.

My buddy said he was fine until he tried to draw and his arrow wasn't nocked all the way. At full draw his nock was down near his lower cam with the broadhead still holding in his rest. He had to let off and re-nock with the buck inside 15 yards. Fortunately we hung the stand in a double tree so the tree covered his movement. He was so shook up it took him 6 trys to get his release on his loop. LMBO Then with the buck slightly quartering away his hit caught top of lung on his side and center lung on the off side.

Here's my buddy's 140" drop tine buck. His best buck to date.

I ate tag soup but it sure tasted fine with my buddy killing this fine buck.

Sorry about your soup, you coming back next year?

Not sure if I'll make it back to IL next year yet fly. I'll have 2 preference points for Iowa going into next year's draw & I'm apt to hunt pretty hard there when I draw a tag. Last time I drew an Iowa tag I hung in there for 11 days in a row till I was comnpletely tuckered out. Chances are I'll draw a KS tag too next year since KS has decided to make enough available to meet demand.

Heading to Iowa before dawn Wed. to do my best impersonation of Cecil B Demills. :) One of my best friends has a tag but he can only hunt for about 4 days. He doesn't know it yet but he's going to be pulling some all dayers.:D Hopefully I can get my buddy on video getting a hole in one. ;)
