coles
I just had to cut the throat of a Muledeer fawn that was hit just down the road from my house. I was on my way home from my girlfriends house and about 1/4 mile from my house i saw some people stopped on the side of the road looking at the front of their vehicle. I stopped and saw they had just hit a deer and i asked if they were ok. There was pieces of their brand new Ford rangers grill all over the road and the muledeer fawn was 20 yards behind their vehicle. They asked if i had a knife to put it down but i didnt have one so i told them i would run home and get one. I got home, put my dog up, changed my pants and put on my boots and by the time I got back they had already left and the deer was still laying there! Guts were hangin out of it, had compound fractures on 3 of 4 legs and the deer was just plain messed up. They just left the deer layin there on the walking path, almost in the front yard of multiple houses. I did the deed and drug it off the path, across the road, and into the ditch. I still cant believe they just left. I guess they didnt need to be there but still.

wyohunter
well you did the right thing, but you have to remember, you said you would do it, so they had prioritys to get with people about the truck, and honestly, not everyone can witness the putting down... whitetailtrax
Hey Cole - there are several things to think about in this situation. To folks like you and I, "dealing" with a wounded animal is not a big deal - but to others it is a very big deal and they just don't have it in them physically or emotionally to deal with it. I do not blame them at all. Because you offered to deal with it, there really was no reason for them to stick around - what more could they do? They probably had somewhere to be. Here is where you both were wrong. It is 100% illegal for a private citizen in Montana to "finish off" a wounded animal...period. This includes and especially pertains to wild animals hit by cars. I don't agree with the law and have broken it a time or two over the years myself....but, the appropriate thing to do is call MFWP and have them come deal with it. I know a person who was fined for doing the exact same thing you did. I know this law stinks and what you did was the humane thing to do, but maybe think twice about it next time. In the time it took you to get home, change clothes, etc. and get back, a game warden might have gotten there just as quick and dealt with it if you or the people who hit the deer had called it in. Not trying to lecture you Cole....I think you did the right thing, but I wouldn't be too upset with the people for leaving.....and maybe consider getting on the cell with FWP next time and let them come deal with it so you don't end up paying a fine for being a caring citizen. The lady said that she wouldnt be able to do it and her husband said he would if he had a knife. but i guess i dont know. I understand the whole part about them not wanting to see it. I was under the impression that it was legal to put a deer down like that. A guy told me that he hit a deer once and put it down with his .22. Then a game warden found out about it and gave him a ticket for shooting it. The game warden supposedly told him that it was legal to cut their throat but not legal to shoot them. Thanks for filling me in. Ill have to remember that next time. Hopefully there isnt a next time though.
