dogdoc
Beautiful morning to be in the stand but started off a little rough. Light variable winds were my first concern but I figured if I wasn't in the stand I wouldn't see anything anyway. I arrived at my stand at 6am with LST starting at 6:23. I found my pull rope broken so I had to climb with bow in hand which I hate to do. Fortunately this stand is only 10 feet high so that wasn't too much of a problem until I got to the top and noticed a large brannch had fallen from the tree and landed on top on my stand which prevented me from getting on top of my stand. I had to climb back down to put my bow down then back up to clear the large branch. I made so much noise that I had a few deer blowing behind me---figured that ended my hunt. Finally got the large branch clear and went back down to retrieve my bow. Resprayed myself with scent killer since I was sweating and at 6:11 I was set to hunt. In this stand there is no seeing the deer approach--it is so thick they just show up and sure enough at 6:55 I hear a stick break and look over to my left and see a buck stepping into the plot. Large body with ugly rack but mature deer. I slowly stand and wait for the shot. After a minute or two the buck starts walking broadside toward my shooting lane. At 15 yards I stop the buck with a light grunt and and take aim and score with a great double lung shot. The arrow penetrates out the other side but doesn't pass out of the buck. The buck kicks and runs into the nastiest/thickest part of my land. I can only watch him for about 20 yards before he disappears. I get down 10 minutes later to look at point of impact and find good blood. I back out and return 40 minutes later. I start the tracking and within 30 yards I find this: The blood trail is excellent and at about 100 yards thru the thickest cover I find this: It took me an hour to drag him out of this stuff--thru a dry creek bed, over logs, under a fence, and thru briars. Today my legs feel like jello and my lower back and shoulders are killing me but it was well worth it. He won't score great as he doesn't have the length and width. At check in after gutting he weighed 140# which of all the deer I have killed is the largest bodied deer I have shot. todd
