6.8 Rem SPC

Was reading a gun mag today, and there was an article about the 6.8 Rem SPC. Anyone have any input, or thoughts on this cartridge. According to the mag article it is shooting a .270 diameter bullet, with less recoil that the .243 Win.

I was just comparing the 6.8 Rem SPC to the 25-06, and the 6.8 seemed to come out on top of every category.

Any thoughts anyone???

Re: 6.8 Rem SPC

It is keeping up with today's short and fat craze. It is basically the same length as the .223 but uses the .30 Remington casing that is necked down and has the shoulder pushed back. This gives it a larger powder capacity, allowing a heavier bullet to be sent downrange. It will be a decent performing cartridge when commercial sales take off. It's going to take the rifle manufacturers to start chambering it in bolt guns, and making sporting ammo for it. It does kind of go against the magnum craze many shooters have now days but it will kill animals just as dead.

I would like to build one on a mini mauser action with a 22" barrel. That should be a sweet deer hunting gun.

Re: 6.8 Rem SPC

From reading the article I read, andfrom the ballistics, and energy charts I was looking at, it seems like an almost perfect Deer round. I believe in the article I read that Rems custon shop is the only place producing bot action hunting guns. Do you know of anyone else planning on chambering for this round?

Re: 6.8 Rem SPC

Marketing will decide on what happend with this cartridge as a sporting cartridge. Whether it is selected as a military cartridge is yet to be determined. I have read rumors about Rem having problems with their ammo, I don't know how true this is. Remington had better do something quick to market this as a commercial cartridge or the public will loose interest fast.

You are correct that Remington's Custom Shop is chambering the round in their Model Seven Alaskan Wilderness Rifle (AWR). How they get Alaskan Wilderness Rifle out of the 6.8 SPC is beyond me, but thats what they are offering. Remington's Law Enforcement's Web Page has the 700 Police LTR listed in 6.8 SPC. Thompson Center has Contender G2 and Encore barrels currently available in the 6.8 Rem SPC.

You an get uppers for the AR15 from Barrett and DPMS. My local gun shop has one in stock, so they are available. SSK Industries is also chambering the 6.8 SPC in the Encore.

Re: 6.8 Rem SPC

I hear ya. It would be the ideal beginner's deer round. It provides decent trajectory, power, and accuracy for a deer gun out to 300 yards. It has minimal recoil, and can be made on a small short action. That thing would be a sweet gun for long hikes. There are a number of custom gun makers that are chambering this round. Once brass hits the shelves, I may have to build one myself. Even if the round goes the way of the dodo bird in a few years, I can still reload it. It will always be easy to get .277" bullets.
