The_Kat
What I wanna know is how you can say you hit the lung for sure. You have no idea in all honestly.....I've made that shot many times with a rifle, but never a bow. Sorry for the lost animal. Back toy your question if you did hit on lung it would eventually fill with blood and flow into the other lung and he was drown in his own blood basically. Stone Cold
First off welcome to the forums! Keep your head up and no matter what people say we have all been there! Even deer with double lung and all geeked up will run forever every so often too. Keep looking and you will find him. You can always lose deer on different situations weather it is rain, crossing a river or creek, not a complete pass through, or anything like that. Keep your head up and keep hunting! We all will stick by any hunter!

AceArcher
While a deer can survive a single shot to the lung it is very unlikely. It is especially unlikely if the arrow got a pass through becouse not only is one lung collapsed and filled with blood but now he is couphing up blood and getting it in the other. Are you sure you hit the lung? Deer have an amazing will to live...especially trophy class bucks. Also...I am curious what type of broadhead you are using? In any event...keep your head up. While it was a marginal shot opportunity...things happen and you dont always get a perfect oppportuinity. I have lost some deer and it make you sick..but you have to move on. Good luck and happy hunting.
MichiganHunter
very doubtfull....He will prob die over night once he gets some cooler air in his lungs and the blood has time to start to thicken in his lungs Edited November 14, 2009 by MichiganHunter

drew11
This is my set up; g5 montec 100gr broadhead, carbon express maxima arrows, mathews dxt set on 70lbs, shootin 310 fps. I've been day dreaming bout his antlers all week, cant wait to go find him. I've got 5 ppl that are going to help search tomorrow. Hopefully if everything goes as planned i'll have a pic of him on here tomorrow. Wish me luck! Really regret takin the shot now. Its definitely better to let him walk and hope for a second encounter. Letting everything walk last year and so far this year hoping for a opportunity on a buck of this caliber maybe made me take the bad shot. We live and we learn. Hopefully somebody can learn for this forum, and not the hard way...like i did

woolybear
You guys that say this is a definite dead deer are fooling yourselves. I was unfortunately fortunate enough to ask a licenced tracker this same question yesterday afternoon searching for a deer of my own and the bigger question is how long can a single lung hit deer survive. Her answer was that there was no telling for sure on the unrecovered deer but she has gone on trails over 48 hrs old with her dog and dispatched them seemingly going about their normal lives, but yes they can survive. The only way to know for sure that you got one lung is to recover him. Your shot may not have hit where you think it did as it's not common but does happen. With over 60 recoveries per season under her belt over the past 5 years, I tend to believe her field observations. http://www.deersearch.org/

drew11
Looked for four more hours yesterday and didnt have any luck. Ive been all over the property. Spent around 24 hours looking for the buck, so i figure he's still alive and my shot placement wasnt a good lung hit. Im going to put a cuddeback at the pinch point i took the shot at. Hopefully i will get a pic of the buck and know he survived for sure.

MNcrittergittr
If you put a broadhead through a deer's lung, it WILL die. Puncturing it's chest cavity, diaphram, liver, LUNGS, HEART, (VITALS) is absolutely lethal. You took a horrible shot, and it sounds like you pushed the deer. Whatever it was that happened, it's sad and avoidable. Bowhunting is more than simply literally hunting with a bow...there is a lot to learn from this experience, and I really hope you use this experience to become a better, more disciplined bowhunter. It's our responsibilty to do all we can, and the best we can in preperation, profficiency, and recovery. We owe it to the animals and the tradition.
