cgilbert08
In the past i have planted summer peas and the deer eat them down to the dirt. I want to plant the summer peas in a new area and I was wondering if anyone had any helpful advice as to how to keep the deer out until the peas are ready. I know i could put up an electric fence but that will be a little out of my budget after buying fence posts and what not.
joeaveragehunter
There are several products out there like a spray that is mostly rotten egg smelling liquid. There is the tape you can put up (save a plot I think). Only problem is, if it rains the liquid can wash off in 2-3 weeks. So unless you live relatively close to the plot it may not be an option. MichiganHunter
given I dont know how large your plot is but my step dad uses this as our plot technique. We plant the plot and take half of it and use snow fencing it's about 3 ft tall and we double it up so it is 6 ft tall and we angle the top half out away from the bottom fence so it makes it harder for the deer to jump...he got the fence at menards on their rebate program, so he bought the fencing and sent in the rebate and got it for free.....it woorks well....kind of a pain to put up he's spending this winter to try to find a new way to hang it.....he's considering putting in perminant posts that he can plant around (so their spread out) and then he can hang once it's planted and let it grow. rhine16
Cheapest thing I know of to do is to buy a cheap solar powered fence charger and run 2 strands of electric fence. A foot on the outside of it, run a strand about a foot high.
Texan_Til_I_Die
The cheapest thing I've ever tried that worked was to get a cheapo portable radio, tune it to some 24 hour AM talk radio station, and turn the volume up. The deer will eventually get used to it, but it takes a while.
wtnhunt
Don't know how well the plot saver tape works, but might give it a try. We use an electric fence around our garden and it is very effective. Plots with peas in them if you are intending them to be food plots for deer might plant some sorghum with them, won't stop the deer from eating the peas, but might help give them a chance. dogdoc
I've heard of people hanging Irish Spring hand soap bars around the plot. Few people swear by it.
ruttinbuc
I've heard of people hanging Irish Spring hand soap bars around the plot. Few people swear by it. I have heard the same thing. I also heard of people using human hair in nylon stockings placed around the plots as an effective deer deterrent.

Never used it, but i know some that swear by the rotten egg stuff. Sounds easy enough and maybe even take TTID up on the radio idea. They sure do love them young tender peas and will go to great lengths to get them.
92xj
I've heard of people hanging Irish Spring hand soap bars around the plot. Few people swear by it. I caught my biggest cat fish to date with a bar of Irish Springs. I recommend that option, it seems to do everything, why not keep deer out of an area.
