The Kid
when tracking a deer, i was just thinking i never have had one but i was thinking if it tells you where you have been it may be easier to do a grid search??
dreamer
i won one in a contest about four years ago i think it would be helpful to let you know where you have been so you dont keep covering the same ground.to be honest i really never have used mine much other than to tell me what the temp is so i can feel even colder. redkneck
I use mine for 3 reasons. First I make maps with it to print out. Secondly, I take it when tracking deer in thick cover to find my way back out. Third to just strike out finding new territory and not giving a second thought to getting turned around. jesse8953
I'm thinking about getting one for deer hunting and duck hunting.Every thing looks the same at dark on a lake.It would be nice to mark the "honey hole" to find your way back to it. dawgitall
Will any kind of hand held GPS do or are there better kinds to use for land use as opposed to water; considering the ability to print out maps etc. The idea of printing our maps sounds very useful in making the most of your property. LifeNRA
Will any kind of hand held GPS do or are there better kinds to use You want one that can lock on satellites through heavy tree cover! Any Garmin that has the HCx or the GPSMAP 60 CSx and above. Any of these will work great on land or water. I have the 60 CSx, love it! I also have the MapSource program which allows me to save all my info on my PC or a disk. You can also print maps. I have maps printed with the GPS locations of all my tree stands. This way, if I do not return home, the wife will have a good idea to tell them where to look for me. Just in case something happens. I plan on using mine right after I hit a deer from my tree stand. Ill range the area last seen, then enter it in my GPS if I need to. Because everything looks different once your on the ground, this way Ill have a good idea where to start my tracking. So far I haven't had this chance, but I know this will work.

Ambuscher
We use the Rhinos made by Garmin. They are a GPS/radio. When one of us key up (say if they need help dragging one out) It also sends your cords to everyone when you let up on the talk key and everyone else can walk right to you. Also use mine for Geocaching. Its a blast. www.geocaching.com Just a plug for them. LMAO
ruttinbuc
Never really had a need for one while hunting. Makes a lot of sense to have it if you are away from home on unfamiliar ground. I still use glow tacks and flagging tape when tracking deer. The units are great for big water fishing...Puts you right back to the spots!
