bbarnhart20
So, I'm sitting in my stand and I have a 3 pt. come by chasing a doe. I couldn't help but start thinkin about it. When you see a deer either a 3 pt. or say a 5 pt. now since they have an odd # of pts. , will they always have an odd number through the years or not? Around here many small bucks get shot so you don't really have the chance to watch them from year to year, somtimes you will see a really nice buck that was fortunate to survive from yr to yr but just a question that popped into my head. MichiganHunter
I would say no. Deer can have changes in antler growth based on yes genetics but on food or water supply. I was even told that if the deer has a tramatic experince like a gun shot wound or any type of accident that can change the way the antlers will grow. It's all about time....at that age people can GUESS what they will be....but you just cant tell, if you know what mature buck breed the doe than you can make a good guess at what it might be. BowTech292
IMO a deer antlers growth is based on genetics and nutritional intake, he can be a 3 one year to a six the next, or a back to a spike. Like MichiganHunter said, a tramatic experience does affect a deers rack, but on the opposite side from the wound. I had always heard this from hunter talk, but got a chance to see it myself last year. I have a main frame 8 point on camera in 2007, holding his right leg up, didnt know the deer was wounded 'till I killed him 1/7/09 as a 10 point,(his right joint was the size of a softball). His brow tine and G4 was smaller on the left side. This is the deer I have as my avatar. I going to try to post the two pics if I can figure it out. Tominator
I think it depends on the genetic pattern in a lot of cases. I know around my one buddy's house, a vast majority of the bucks have a weak left side. The 10 point I shot on his property back in 1998 was 2" away from being a 9 pt. The year later he shot a 6 point with the same weak side, a year later he shot a 7 pt that had just the beginnings of a G-3 on the left. Weird. Its all genetics but if given the chance they can become great deer.
