November Carnage

Well, i shot this buck on wednesday november 11thwhile down in east central IL at a friends farm, but honestly, i misjudged his age and shouldn't have taken him. heres how it all went down...

I was in the stand, had a buck 3 quarters the way up a ridge on my right about 50 yds away. He looked like a good buck, but i couldn't get a really good look at him to figure out his age, so i threw everything, not just the kitchen sink, but the entire house at him to get him to comit to me...Started with the grunt call, proceeded to growl, proceeded to grunt and hit the can and growl, and got nothing...he just stared in my direction like a lost soul. So finally, i said the heck with it, and i hit him with the snort wheeze, which will normally work on a dominant buck. He wanted nothing to do with it, and went the other way. Not 2 minutes later i hear what sounds like a 2 ton pick up coming throught the thick bottoms. I make out a big body, white antlers, and see one stiff legged ears back im gonna kill someone buck coming from my left. I automatically thought by his size and attitude that he was a mature buck...I have one shooting lane where he is headed and draw back. He steps in it, i stop him, his head is behind a big oak, and i let it fly. The rage two blade spined him and dropped him in his tracks at 36 yds. This all happened in about 7-8 seconds. I thought he was an easy 4 year old that would go in the low 140's. Well when i got down and walked up to him, all i could do was sit there and say to myself "i'm an idiot, he's a 3 1/2 year old that would have been a stud next year". Needless to say, whats done is done, and i can't take my arrow back...He's a good deer, but i hate to see the potential go out the window due to my poor judgement. Valuable lesson learned here.

Anyhow, i tagged him and took care of everything, and arrived back home on sunday afternoon about 12:30. Did a few things, took a shower and was in the stand by 2:00...It would prove to be a rough night for the ladies...i had these two big does, one weighing in at 142 lbs down by 3:30 pm.

I did this so you could read the whole story without it being interupted by the thing hanging on the right side of the screen.

I dont know how much acreage you have to hunt in East Central IL, but I hunt West Central IL and would not have let that buck walk by, 3.5 or not. First of all, I consider a 3.5 yo 10 pt a darn good deer. I understand if you've got studs runnin around, but dont hang your head. Most people would kill for an opportunity like that. Great buck and a great weekend with the 2 does.

Great buck Smack!

Shot one about like that last Thursday at 5pm. Looked like a perfect shot. 30 yards quartering away, saw the arrow in his shoulder with good penetration as he ran. Went back Friday and found hair, no blood. Not a drop. Followed the trail he ran on and found more hair, but no blood and no deer. I'm sick over it. Glad to see you came up with a BEAUTY this season.
