Camera recommendations

I was chewed out (again) for taking my wife's digital camera to the woods without permission (duh, she won't give me permission!) and I yelled back for her to buy me a camera, then. She yelled back, "buy one yourself!" which I take to mean, "Honey, you should get yourself a digital camera to take hunting with you!"

So what should I get? Compact, moderately rugged, good for after shots and a few from the stand. Not looking to drop hundreds, or get the quality (weights, size) of a digital SLR with multiple lenses.

Whatcha think??

I have a Sony Cybershot (sp?) I think it was around $350 and it seems to take prettty good pics. It has a few different "idiot" settings on it so even I can just turn the dial to take better pics in certain situations. :o;)

+1. Replied in your other post in the equipment room as well Chris. Don't really think you could go wrong with one of the cybershot cams. This is the cam I sent with the wife to Alaska http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665339418. Picked one up from ebay for $79 shipped with a 2 gig mk2 memory stick.

Been using sony cybershot cams for my homebrew trail cams too, in my experience they are pretty durable cams.

www.dpreview.com has all the info you might need to make a choice. There are a lot good super zoom point and shoot cameras out there. I have a Canon S3 IS with a 12x zoom which is a few years old already. They offer a 20x zoom now with HD video. The user reviews on it are pretty good. I think it retails for $500. Can probably get it for $400. Like anything else you have to research the best you can after deciding what you will be using it for. Sony, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Kodak, Pentax, etc, etc, etc, all have something to offer.

I have a Kodak Z612...takes nice photos...little noisy when you turn it on but it has a self timer which I've used alot lately and it takes some nice photos. It has a zoom on it, so it's a little big when stuck in a backpack..

One thing you should look for is Image Stabilization...helps alot in my opinion.

Kodak and Canon make some decent cameras at a decent price.
