deerslayer06
Hey everyone, I have been forever a avid deer hunter but coyote hunting has always intrigued me. Now I have the opportunity to start! I live in a suburb outside of Indy and my mom's friend has a farm outside city limits. She has had a problem with a group of 10-12 coyotes running the property and harassing animals. She would like me to come out and start harvesting them. I am really excited, the only problem is, I don't know much about coyote hunting. I don't have any decoys, calls or fancy coyote guns. This is where YOU come in. Any advice or suggestions you have for me, throw them at me! I am eager to learn more about this increasingly popular sport! -I will be using a Mossberg 535 12gauge shotgun with a 22" barrel. I can shoot shells up to 3.5". What loads/chokes do you recommend for hunting dogs with this gun? -Can you recommend any calls, decoys or other essentials I will need to be successful? One thing to keep in mind, I am a college student on a low budget, so the more wallet friendly these necessities are, the better! Any feedback at all is helpful. Thanks for your time! sureshot
it would be nice if you had a rifle to hunt with also, not always you will get up close and personal with them, any mouth call will work, go to the local walmart and get one, I prefer open reed but any will work, then I would go to the internet and type in rabbit distress call sounds or something like that, you will get to hear what they soud like, I know I bought a primos call a few years back and it had a tape with it, woud really help a beginner figuring out how to make it sound, jsut whne blowing try to make a really raspy sound, you ant it to sound like the rabbit is screaming with the troat full of blood and gurgling, think like a rabbit getting bit, scream and go up and down and change all the pitches all the way through, when you breath make it sound like the rabbit gasping for air, it is easy once you get on to it, next thing try to know were the coyotes are, get in position without being seen and quietly, always and I mean aways think of were you think they will come from then set up so if they try to get downwind you will see them before,or call a area were they cannot get downwind of you, if there is a lake or river they prob will not cross and come in slowly to try to spot you, ALWAYS use the wind to your advantage, expect them to circle, and next never expect to know were theya re coming lol, I was calling a huge slough today with a 40 mph wind in my face and the slough in front of me expecting them to try to circle on either side to get to the open field behind me and wind me, I just happened to glance behind me and 2 yotes were within 100 yards and just winded me, no idea were they came from, one ended up in the truck, just goes to show you then can be anywere never think you know for sure were they are coming from, make a few small sequences with a 5 minute or so pause between them, [sequence 20-40 seconds] make sure youa re well camoed and out of direct face sunlight if possable, being in shade is best, never make quick movement becouse they will prob be watching you before you see them, if you see them in a distance call a bit quitly, if calling for shotgun I would get a mouse squeeker, they can hear it out to a couple hundred yards on calm days, works wonders, just call enough to keep them interested when they are coming, they start to move quit they stop start, once in range only move when there heads are turned or down, if they are watching you they will bust, I expect a good number 2 or bb 3 1/2 shoudl get you out to 50 yards, I never use a shotgun becouse te hides gets downgraded with the pellet steaks through the fur,not to sure about shotguns, good luck and hope this helped a bit, any questions just ask, if it was me dealing with this pack I would be using howlers, a pack like that is usually really territorial and if they get a challange from another coyote they will come in to chase him off, but in my experiance if you are not sure on howlers they can do more harm than good, good luck and let me know how you did!!!
