bghunter777
Last year i found a piece of land in WV that was amazing hunting. unfortunately i only had one day to hunt and it was during gun season. I did not take a deer but my father shot a good buck. This year I tried archery hunting the land. for one reason or another the deer were just not where we thought they would be. I think because the acorn crop was great this year and not last the deer were not where they were last year at this time. The land is almost 13 thousand acres plus the miles and miles of sorrounding land its not like hunting farm country whitetails you have to adapt these deer have tons of land to rome. I plan on going down sunday and trying to hike back into some of the larger oak ridges to find the deer then hunt opening day Monday and tuesday wish me luck im pumped. I really enjoy the mountains and low hunting pressure WV offers if your willing to walk a mile or two.
OUTSIDER
I didn't know that we had land like that in West Virginia....Just to let you know, we are having a wide spread mast shortage this year. Oaks may be completely gone in the area your talking about. Good luck to you.
arrow32
Outsider that kind of land is all over the state. You just have to be willing to walk and get away from the people. Most people won't walk those mountains. The deer are far and few between up in some of those areas but I tell you what there are some monsters. Best of luck on your quest bud and I hope you bust a big back country buck.

OUTSIDER
Don't tell me about walking to get away from people lol, ...i stalk native brooke trout, talk about walking to get into the fish, and away from people here in wv.... There are not many places in wv where you can be more than a few miles from anyone, be it a home, camp, road, or whatever else. I know of a place in mingo county that is about as remote as it gets, even more so than the cranberry. bghunter777
Update on my WV trip! Well this year was very different than last. The overall deer population was down in the area i was hunting. The local game manager said he is not sure why but for whatever reason there were not as many as last. That being said the hunting was still above average. Another factor is the hunting pressure doubled from last season which is not always condusive to good hunting. The area i hunt is a public land older age whitetail property. I did see a few nice 2.5 and 3.5 year olds taken but no monsters. Personally on Monday opening day I saw 14 deer but all where doe. Tuesday the 2nd day of the season I moved around a little more than opening day I ended up seeing 21 deer about half were deer i jumped while still hunting or changing locations from a morning to evening stand site. day 2 of the 21 deer 5 were bucks and 3 met the 14 inch minimum spread. 2 or the 3 i saw while walking and got close but just never got a good shot. the one was just legal and the other was probably in the 115 to 120 class. The 3rd legal buck was early morning chasing a doe through very thick cover. This buck was very nice probably in the 120 to 130 range but never presented a shot. Overall I still had a blast but finding low hunting pressure and the deer was a little harder than last season.
