Randys 2009 Archery Buck

Well, as most of you know I had William up in Wisconsin for about a week of bowhunting. That man hunted his butt off and if anyone deserved a nice buck, it would be him. I'm a little hesitant to even post this as I feel bad for him. I actually had a really good week with multiple sightings of some truly great bucks. William on the other hand seemed to be in the wrong spot at the wrong time. I tried my best to put him in the right stands but, it seemed they always came to where I was. I'd sit in the exact same spots he did every year given the same conditions. (wind direction and lots of corn standing yet) Everything was a little different this year than normal. The big bucks weren't running the river bottom and they never started running the ridge until the last day of his hunt.

Anyways, the last day of his hunt my buddy Mike had seen 10 different bucks and 5 of them ran the ridge so I told William to go sit in his favorite little pine tree, (;):D) and I'd go down to the river bottom while Mike sat on the food plot. We kinda had the entire area blocked off and one of us would probably get a chance at a nice buck.

At 1:30 we headed to the stands and it was HOT, I think it hit 72 degrees that day. My stand was in the direct sun and I decided to curl up to the tree and get a little nap in. (it had been a long week LOL) At about 3pm I heard some brush snapping and a couple of grunts and this buck steps out at about 50 yards. He must have been bedded right there! He started heading my way and I eased back the Bone Collector Alphamax and got ready for a shot. By the time he turned completely broadside my top limb hit the leaning tree I was in and I had to let down. I carefully brought my bow to the other side of the tree and my buddy Mike let out a grunt call, stopping the buck perfectly at about 15 yards. I put the pin on him and sent the Rage tipped Carbon Express towards his heart. Thwack!! The arrow struck home and the buck made it about 50 yards and took a dirt nap. Mind you, William was watching this as it happened. Sorry Buddy...

Not the biggest buck in the woods but a good one, none the less...

Yep it was warm alright, and gotta admit I was pretty tired, fought nodding off as hard as I could.:sleep1:

Ummm yeah that buck looked kinda familiar, positive he was the one I saw Wednesday come out of the corn at 44 yards and head with the wind then turn back into the corn rather than take the same route the 2 younger bucks ahead of him took through that bedding area that would have led him right under me. He looked pretty wide as I watched him walking in and watched you draw on him. Wanted bad to grunt, had you not been in that tree I would have done some calling, chance he might have come on in on the grunt.

Favorite pine tree eh. lol.:D I only sat that stand that day, need to let it grow a bit bud, still think that limb gives away the slightest movements. Shame I was not there earlier that morning in the stand you were sitting when Mike saw all those deer, was in the "little marsh" watching a little 1.5 year old eight pointer walk by me at 18 yards instead.

Don't feel bad bud, had a good time. Happy for you that you got a nice buck, would have been happier if I had tagged him though.:D Congratulations again Randy.:)

So is Mike done yet?

That's hunting. I have been through the same thing as William. Some years back I was hunting Illinois with ildrhtr, John. He did all he could do to get me on the deer, but it didn't work out. I had a terrible cold the whole week and he and his wife Meredith did all they could to make me comfortable.

John was my one on one guide sitting up in the loft of an old barn with his binoculars and watching what the deer were doing. He would then set me up in what he thought would be the best place to sit. He took me to a couple other good spots with 8 inch tree rubs and scrapes the size of pick up hoods. He didn't want to hunt as it was my hunt, but I insisted that he do. After all, it was deer season! He ended up calling in and killing a Pope and Young 8 pointer that went close to 250lbs! We busted our chops getting it out of the hole it fell in, but we got it out. I was thrilled to death and very happy for him. To this day he still says he feels bad about that. I had the opportunity last year hunting behind his beautiful new home for a good buck, but couldn't close the deal. Again, that's hunting. I was to return this season, but due to circumstances beyond my control I couldn't make the trip. I was looking forward to no doubt. Thanks again,John! Maybe next year?

Once again, Nice buck Randy! Way to go teammate!!! :)

Congrats on a nice buck!!!

This year has been quite different in my neck of the woods too as far as deer behavior goes.

I will 2nd that!!!!

Great Buck Randy. Don't feel bad for William, you were just being rewarded for your generosity. The hunt is what is important, not the filled tag! Plus that is points for Team #18. WTG
