Casey
During winter, what will the deer hit the most, oats or winter wheat??

rhine16
By winter, I assume you mean December/January?? Both will be stunted by the cold weather. I'm going to guess wheat would be the better of the two during the late season though. However, I think you would be better off with rye if you are targeting that time of year. Wish we had a pennington retailer around here still. Have had great results here with wintergrazer rye planted in the fall. Winter wheat does ok here, have not really used oats planted by themself. Best draw we have had though has been the rye.
AaronS
Go the the local co-op and buy winter rye (if you can find it). I had to wait until Labor Day until if was available. Not sure if they still have any or if it's all sold. If you want some info on wheat vs. rye, I'll post a link to the QDMA forum.
dogdoc
I've always been a big fan of wheat. However rye will have a longer growing season. I can't honestly say the deer prefer one over the other in my experience. However--if you have good freezes oats will die where the wheat and rye will stay green all winter. TN Bucknasty
Here in my little corner of the world, they will utilize both plants at different times. They browse on the wheat a little when it's tender, then they'll pound it in November and december. They seem to prefer the oats early like in September and October, and then they totally abandon them later. !5 miles away, they'll eat them both all season. Funny how different herds have different preferences.
