Tom2008
I've only owned a Marlin 30-30 and a couple of .22 from Remington, but I've never actually went out and looked at any bolt action rifles or anything like that. I've hunted Montana for two years and brought my 30-30 along, but I'd like to have something else a little more suitable for the area. I haven't been out there for 2 years now, but Uncle and Grandpa might be planning on another trip for next fall. I was checking out the Remington Model 700 or possibly a Winchester Model 70. I was wondering what other people's thoughts are on these firearms. Any helpful advice would be greatly appreciated or other suggestions. Thanks you
bucknut
I would also consider either a Browning X bolt or Tikka T3.. I have a X bolt in 270wsm and a T3 in .22-250. Both are great and light enough to carry all day.
m gardner
Thompson Center is making a bolt gun with an adjustable trigger and detachable magazine in 270 win.,30-06 and 300 win mag for $450.00. It comes with weaver bases too. Sportsman's Warehouse here is carrying them. Mark

hunterbobb
In my opinion the Remington 700 is the finest rifle made. It is the rifle that has been in continous production longer than any. The reason for that is that they got it right the first time around. I would suggest you look into buying a Model 700 in 270 Win. If you are planning on huntiing anything bigger than antelope. The 243 might be a little on the weak side for larger game. The Model 70 while a good gun has been redesigned over and over again. They get it right and then they change something in order to save a few dollars in the production process. The black shadow model was one of the last model 70's to come out of the original production facilities. To put it delicatly the quality control at winchester by that time left something to be desired. Now I know everyone is going to say they have a black shadow and it is a wonderful gun. This is probably true, and Chevy made woderful cars. But a Porsche is a wonderful car too. If you want a Chevy buy a Winchester 70. If you want a Porsche, buy a Remington 700 :gun2:
huntinman802
i love the model 70 but i do agree with you hunterbobb. winchester made the plate where you load the shells out of plastic in order to save money. that is the only thing i really dont like about the gun. i am trying to find a model 70 pre-64' but not too much luck

I've seen what it can do and I haven't noticed any problems with the success of this caliber. The Model 700 is something I've been looking at for a few years now. Just wanted to know a little more about what is out there. I'm a bowhunter at heart and don't hunt with guns that much anymore if at all. The only reason I'd be getting another one would be to hunt out in Montana with my Grandpa and Uncle. Grandpa uses a .243 and I've seen the way the deer drop after the shot or barely make it 20 yards. I have some friends that use .243 on big Minnesota Whitetails every year and success is at 100%. Jeramie
.243 is a great round. I carried one into the woods this past weekend. I did however go back to the .30-06. Ive never been let down by my .243 but the extra punch makes me feel a hair better about the shot. I too LOVE the Remington 700 line (Avoid the 710 and 770's). Ive owned a few, both chambered in .30-06 oddly enough. They are great shooting rifles and deadly accurate. Savage is another great gun (as mentioned above). They are nicely priced and deadly accurate too. Tika, good accurate guns at a fair price. Ruger, I have a couple (including on in .243). Very accurate. The only shortfall with them is the cost of the rings. The rings are staggering! Of course, once you buy a set youre done. They are great shooters. wtnhunt
Also a big fan of the remington model 700's Tom. There are other good guns out there, would shoulder as many as you can and see what feels right to you. The browning a bolt and savage model 10 bolt guns are good guns as well, my personal preference for rifle is a model 700 though.
DocMort
Never been a fan of a 243 you get the same amount of kick out a bigger gun like 7-08 or the 308 and be alot better off if a less than desirable shot is made.
Grady269
You can get the 700 in .257 Weatherby mag.
cain
I can attest to the quality of the Model 700. My deer rifle of choice is my late great uncle's .308 which him and my grandfather purchased matching rifles back before I was even born (I'm 32). My rifle has taken down countless animals including my 10 pointer this past opening day and shoots just as good as the day it was purchased. huntinman802
also the remington 742 and 760 are great guns. stay away from the 740 because they jam ALLLLL the time. not too sure of all the calibers they come in.
Tom2008
Yeah Remington Model 700 looks like what I want to go for. Looking at an SPS Stainless at the moment or just a regular SPS. All other models are out of my price range. Shouldered a Tikka T3 tonight and thought it was alright. Shouldered nice and was nice and light. Has really cheap plastic clip though.
johnf
I've got a 243 and love it for it's light recoil ability to shoot flat. If I were getting a gun to shoot out west I would go for a 270 or 308. Lots of "what if's" out West. The 700 is a great gun.
Texan_Til_I_Die
I currently own a Remington 700, a Savage 116, and a Ruger M77. All three shoot very well and I've never had a malfunction of any type from any of them. For looks, it's the Ruger, hands down. Beautiful wood and I've always been a fan of their styling. For long range work and extreme accuracy, it's the Savage. For ruggedness I'd go with the Remington. For calibers, 243 is good but why not step up to a 308? It's much more versatile and if you decide to shoot a lot, good cheap ammo is readily available.
dbHunterNY
Remingtons are great guns. Not much luck at all with Winchester rifles, other than an old 30-30. I'd look at T/C and Savage rifles before you make your decision. T/C Venture is an awesome gun for the money. Also, I'd look at Savage rifles with an accu-stock and accu-trigger they can get pretty accurate.

Just a thought Tom, but a .270 really is not bad if you are thinking about recoil. My oldest daughter(13) shoots my .270 model 700, it has less recoil than the 20 gauge 870 with turkey loads. My daughter is kind of small.

coles
my girlfriend had never shot any rifle larger than a 22lr. She wanted to shoot my 270 since she was goin to start hunting with me this year. After the first shot i saw her crack a smile and after that she wanted mine! So i got an awesome deal on a Ruger Hawkeye all weather 270 and the rest is history. She is a dead eye with the sucker. Killed her first buck this year with perfectly placed shot. She never developed a flinch and loves to shoot it. I honestly think she would make me go broke buying her ammo if she could go out and shoot every day! She shoots 130 gr Federal Fusions out of hers and i shoot the same out of mine and have had awesome luck with them. I say get a 270, possibly get some reduced recoil loads just to start her off and ya'll will never look back! 270 is the way to go for deer! Good luck! johnf
One of my friends wife shoots a 270. She is about 5'5" and probably 110-120lbs. She was also a finalist in the Ms. Arkansas pageant a few years back. She's no big redneck chick at all.
