The_Kat
Well I finally connected on a buck this morning out in the canyons. We hadn't seen a thing all morning and were just about to call it quits when my uncle Mike spotted a buck cruising behind us. Instantly he said he is a shooter get ready. I asked how big and he said he's a big non typical, get ready boy hurry up! I had the sun in my face and in the deers advantage. Finally I spotted the buck walking towards us and see he is wider than his ears just barely, but my uncle Mike knows a shooter when he sees one so I ignored his rack and settled in for the shot. As the buck slowed his pace I aimed and squeezed the trigger.....BANG....TWANG! The deer froze as I lost him in the sun and Mike yelled ya missed. I chambered another round and frantically looked for the deer again....found him, aimed, squeezed and BANG NO TWANG and dropped him in his tracks. Couldn't figure out the first miss, but look to see the top strand of the fence shot in two lol. Anyways I was glad to see the buck drop in his tracks and Mike was estatic. He said hes gnarly bud go check him out which I did. When I walked up my heart sank immediately. The deer is nice alright, and is a double beamed 12 point, but he is much smaller than the two deer we saw opening morning. He is my biggest buck inch wise ever. I guess I should be tickled for the double beam, but I just can't shake this dissappointment. So heres some pics of him.....sadly another year goes by without a wall worthy deer. Picking the bow up and going in the morning and also gonna try to get Jenn one of those bruisers we saw opening day! I apologize for the crappy pic quality but the sun kept downing out the pics. MNcrittergittr
Dude...you should be happy! I can understand taking your experienced uncle's word for it, but if you didn't know exactly what you were shooting at, why squeeze the trigger? That's a great buck there! I think too many people get too caught up in score and all that. Sounds like you had a great experience with loved ones. And I'll tell ya what, somethings are a lot bigger than anything you can hang on your wall. Congrats!
wtnhunt
Would be happy with one like that Kyle. Congratulations. Disappointment here for our rifle opener was that we did not see ANY bucks.

cain
While I can't see the pic because of this lovely webfilter at work, I can only imagine it's a nice deer from everyone's comments; so congrats on a nice buck. As my grandfather used to and my uncle still tells me: "at least you got ya one this year". I know I for one and am sure not alone have gone a season or two without seeing a deer much less even killing one. A local non-hunting message board I'm on has a deer hunting thread where a couple of guys claim they pass up "130-140" deer because they aren't big enough. I know I'm just an average hunter from Western Kentucky, but I don't think I could sit still in the stand with excitement if one of those got within shooting range. Deer hunting to me is more about the experience and the fact you hunt with your family should be the best part. Or at least it is for me. Again congrats on the buck! Deer hunting to me is more about the experience and the fact you hunt with your family should be the best part. Or at least it is for me. I pass those deer because I have goals. Everyone has goals in hunting, and those goals differ from everyone. My dissappointment comes from the hours I spent on stand this season letting deer like this go waiting on a true monster. I'm thankful for the oppurtunity to hunt with my uncle and take a deer. One correction, I was on private land this morning in NW Oklahoma. I have hunted on some semi public state regulated land this weekend where I passed the decent 8's. Thank you all for your comments on the deer. I still have another buck tag too
92xj
Seriously? Next time dont waste so much time and just kill a spike in the early season.
Jorden
Very nice deer Kyle. I understand your dissapointment. I, like you, have certain goals about what kind of deer I'd like to harvest and if for some reason in a moment of excitement shot a deer that I wouldnt have ordinarly shot I would be happy with what I shot but dissapointed that I got caught up in the moment and shot a deer I would have normally let walk. Again, congrats on the deer, he is a dandy but I understand how you feel;)
MCH
Thank you all for your comments on the deer. I still have another buck tag too Yeah, but thankfully there's a notation in small print that says: "Your second buck of the season cannot be a wallhanger from McCurtain County. You must pass up this buck so that your friend, Kevin, has the opportunity to fill one of his TWO EMPTY tags."
Dawg
He'd be on my wall too just because he's a non-typical. We have new antler restrictions this year and if I were to shoot that buck then my next buck would have to be either a spike or have one unbranched antler. I would have taken that deer in a heart beat. Don't be so hard on yourself dude, it's a nice buck!

If I want meat i will kill does and wait for the big boys but thats what I do everyone has the right to do what they want too
