col3
So far this season i can think of six people ive talked to that have shot one antlered bucks( me being one of them), and here in manitoba i cant really ever remember bucks break their antlers off, can this be attributed to the very unseasonably warm weather we have had so far this november? or is purley just fluke that they have been taken? i know ive seen videos where bucks in texas have broken antlers, but i figured that was because texas bucks dont have as much mass.. maybe it has somthing to do with warm weather? i dunno maybe its a stupid question, but i thought id ask

layin on the smackdown
It happens to the best of em, especially in the midwest, but more over, it happens everywhere...If you have big deer, especially heavy bodied animals, you are going to have broken racks. When those big boys go at it, its prison rules and they don't hold back a thing. Every year i am impressed with heavy antlered deer that are busted up from the rut...deer you would never expect to be busted up, deer that you think couldn't get broken up unless a car hit em. Its just one of those things...
NBomb500
Interesting question and comments. Last year we had a big 10 broken up. Sad because he was a really nice buck.
The_Kat
Alot of broken antlers is a likely sign of a mineral deficiency in your area. I saw two broken bucks this weekend. Another cause could be a well balanced buck to doe ratio causing the bucks to fight more to compete for does....but I'd put my money on mineral troubles. Stickslinger
I have noticed alot of smaller bucks this year with broken or completely missing antlers. I have a few trail cam pics from summertime and many of the bucks didn't have 2 antlers to start with. This year it seems like there are more 1 horns running around than in years past, if it is a mineral problem wouldn't these 1 horns show up every year? The Kid
i've seen three bucks this year with broken antlers so i think u might be on to something
The_Kat
Minerals change some year to year based on rainfall. But for the most part yes they stay the same. You don't see nearly as many broken racks or one antlered deer in central/eastern okla as ya do in western/northern okla. Its a mineral variance, but it is usually always this way unless of a drought condition, which also usually results in bucks with thinner antlers. Type in Whitetail Antlers and Minerals in google and read up on what Dr. Deer has to say about it.
doubledrop
Maybe Mr. Nasty is making his way through the woods looking for a fight and layin the smack down on all these other bucks....LOL
wtnhunt
Have seen a few bucks with one side busted off this year, they were younger deer. Kinda figure they were too stupid not to leave the area when the big boy was around.
col3
All these bucks have been little guys, there is alot of alfalfa near my property and there is lots of bigger bucks running around so its most likely bigger bucks taking their tole on the little guys antllers
BearClaw
I shot a one horn 3 pt during our early muzzleloader season and there is another one we've seen on camera. That one was still in velvet recently so not sure what's up.
MNcrittergittr
I don't have an in-depth scientific explanation, but I don't think it has anything to do with the weather. Maybe it's just one of those things...
cray8705
I had a trail cam picture of a buck with a broken side and I also saw him one evening bow hunting. I just recently got another picture of him and now the other side is broken off with a just alittle bit sticking up on each side. I think the big buck has just taken it to him a couple times. To add to that i've been seeing more bucks than does, which is unusual for where I hunt in Wi, but I wonder if part of it is less breeding opportunity so more fighting? The_Kat
I don't have an in-depth scientific explanation, but I don't think it has anything to do with the weather. Maybe it's just one of those things... Not necessarily weather like wind, cold, heat, but rainfall totals during the growing season has a direct correlation to antler growth in an area. Also injury to a deers body affects antler growth as well.
