Deer rifle!

I was wondering if anyone knew if a 220 swift would kill a deer. I figure if your hunting does that a head shot would kill one alright, but I am a trophy hunter so i was wondering if a 220 swift would kill a trophy buck just by shootin them right behind the front leg.

Re: Deer rifle!

it will kill a deer no problem, but if it touches any sort of twig, the bullet is going to vere off somewhere than the deer. if it is ONLY field hunting you are doing, maybe, but that is still a small bullet. up here i wouldnt go under .27 caliber. but that is because i hunt mostly thick areas, where anything smaller would bounce off anything it touches.

Of course the swift will kill a deer, but is it ethical to use, I don't think so. Personally I wouldn't use anything smaller than a .243. My choice gun for deer is a 25/06.

Re: Deer rifle!

The father of a co-worker of mine shoots several deer

each year with a 220 Swift.

During the past 35 years, my Dad and brother have taken

over 50 deer with their 22-250's using Hornady 55gr SP's.

No deer made it past 50yds. Rule of thumb when using

22 caliber on deer is lung shots ONLY! The only horror

story with which I'm personally experienced was a head

shot at less than 40yds. The bullet exploded (failed)

on the side of the skull, and did not enter the head.

By the way, Dad has three very nice racks from very

large mule deer hanging in his living room, each taken

with just one lung shot with his 22-250. Make your

shots well, and the Swift will not dissapoint you.

I preferred the 25-06 only because of its better x-wind

handling abilities for p-dog hunting, and used the

same bullet for deer, the Hornady 75gr HP. From the

posts I see in this thread, most would object to that,

too. My deer never saw it past 25yds, though -- again,

lung shots.

Re: Deer rifle!

I'm not disagreeing that it will kill deer, but, can we all make lung shots 100% of the time ?? What if a deer moves, or a unseen twig gets in the way, you have a wounded deer there. I would prefer a bullet that can penetrate bones to get through the vitals.

In my mind, we owe that to the game we shoot at smile.gif

Can we??......yes

Will we??......no

If a deer moves, or an unseen twig gets in the way,

ANY caliber can possibly get you a wounded deer. Two

years ago, an unseen grapevine hit @ 20yds deflected

a 245gr bullet 8" @ 75yds, the distance of the deer

from the muzzle. It hit aft of aiming point (just behind

the shoulders) and ended up going through the rear

lung, diaphram, liver. Had the bullet been deflected

the other direction, it would have hit to the front of the

briskett resulting in a wounded deer. Point is, you can

wound a deer with any caliber out there.

In my mind, NOTHING beats a well placed shot. I owe

that to the game I shoot at. It is true whether I hunt

with my 22-250, 25-06, or .50 Savage ML.

Go ahead MO Hunter, just place your shots well. If you

cannot make a good lung shot on one deer, just have

the patience to wait for the next. I've personally field

dressed a deer with totally liquified lungs brought on

by a Hornady 55gr SP with a MV of 3600fps. No deer

can travel far or recover from that! grin.gif
